Fabian eyed the dying embers in the fireplace. It was rare that anyone came through the Floo in the Department’s Entrance Chamber. He’d given Marlene the address, that had been the simple part. Waiting here, for her to appear, was the problem. No one used this Floo. That meant the silence only filled the hall. He had plenty of space to think - and that was never good, having to fight the desire to pace across the hallway in step with his hurried thoughts.
He had full confidence in this decision, of course he did. Even if he had never mentored anyone before, at least he had chosen someone he was comfortable around. Letting out a breath, he knew that was wrong. Comfortable was the last word to describe being around Marlene. But no, that was something not to think about, at any costs.
Levitating the papers out of his bag, Fabian shuffled through them to give himself something to do. The paperwork wasn’t really the most important thing, it was the magical binding he needed to think about. He had never performed it on someone, only been the one making the vow. It was a heavy responsibility, getting it right. And that was only a reminder of how serious this job was in entirety. Not one to take lightly. Not one to give out lightly.
If Gideon was here, if they really could read each other’s minds, like Fabian had once suggested learning to do - Fabian knew precisely what he’d be saying. It matched the one underlying thought Fabian had amongst his river of mental currents. You’ve made a big mistake, Fab. (Of course, Gideon would probably also say, just kiss her, it’s obvious you want to. There were many reasons he didn’t listen to his brother.) The flames flared to life, not startling him. Every sense had been waiting for it eagerly. He stood quickly, with his lips curling upwards. “On time and everything. If you hadn’t already made a good impression, you’d be in danger of making one now.”
