Mary had been dancing, for a while and stumbled off the dance floor to find herself with a flute of champagne in her hands when her eyes landed on Amos Diggory. In the best of ways, much like all those she actually considered herself familiar with her did stick out. It was a good thing, she decided.

"Oh, hi! Looking great. Again." She shook her head. "Is that going become a habit, too?" A pattern. Somehow whenever Amos was involved Mary found herself following patterns entirely by accident. No intention, or logic behind it. "Isn't this wonderful? Everyone is having such a great time."

If one could count on one thing it was Mary MacDonald trying to make the best of any situation. Even a gala that had her surrounded by those who'd probably throw her out at a moments notice, the brunette could be found near a space cleared for dancing, bobbing along to the music and all but managing to move toward another and almost step on their feet.

"I'm sorry! Did I hit your foot?" The witch whirled around and for a moment an apologetic look flickered across her face before the next layer of music, notes drifting pushed the smile back onto her face. "Isn't it lovely?" She was very much hoping to dance if things would work out in her favor.

The heavy, dark magic humming through Burke Manor felt like a second skin as Rodolphus drifted through the crowd with a glass of firewhisky, looking entirely in his element. He was born for rooms like this, surrounded by old money and pureblood names.

But honestly, it was an absolute chore to be here tonight. His jaw was tight as he forced himself to make the rounds, offering just enough polite nods and quick hellos to keep up appearances. Listening to the same old political gossip from the sycophants around him was exhausting.

He finally managed to untangle himself from a particularly tedious conversation about Ministry politics. Stepping into a quieter pocket of the room, he caught the eye of a familiar face standing nearby. With a weary, knowing roll of his eyes toward the crowd, he raised his glass slightly in their direction a clear, bid for some normal company to help pass the time.

Carefully observing she'd stood on the side, a calming presence as she always had been. If not for her job, perhaps one could have assumed Hestia Jones to be a pillar of strength and tranquility. Far from it. Every moment that the witch spent surrounded by people proven or suspected loyal she found herself worrying, yet constantly and continuously pushing that aside in favor of enjoying the rest of the evening. There was more to life, more to this than chaos and hatred.

It came as even more of a surprise when she noticed, drink in hand, Rodolphus Lestrange's gesture, sure for a moment that her eyes must have been playing a trick, a flicker of the light perhaps. Feet carried her, out of habit and perhaps that very old instinctual habit to be polite.

"Is the company truly that bad?" A simple question posed, welcoming him to curse her down the very same time her brows raised in question. Hestia could not help the layer of sarcasm that mixed into her tone, curious as she was even then and there. "You look as though you've spoken to a horde of gnomes in an attempt to entertain them." Once upon a time her family had belonged with the others. Now she could not even imagine the thought. - @lordlestrange

after socializing and pretending to like the disgrace of those muggle pieces of 'art', alecto decided that she needed some air. the perfect spot nearby the fountain and rose garden was waiting for her and she took a seat, letting out a soft sigh. the cool breeze blew her bright red hair in an elegant manner. she closed her eyes for one second and when she opened, her peace was already interrupted by someone.

"needed fresh air?" she asked.

Plenty could happen in a night like these. Plenty of talking and socializing and pretending to get along with everyone and everything. Hestia, outside the ministry was simply a witch. To some she was the enemy, to others a disappointment. On the side she'd been dodging her family. As much as she loved them, her parents need to stand against the current of those family's flow of life yet their insistence to act as though to them they still belonged was tiring.

She could appreciate the idea, but to many they were the issue. The witch disliked the idea of facing fake niceties. "Yes, quite desperately. It does get a bit crowded in there." - @misscarrow

lucius had talked to almost everyone of importance at the gala at least twice and his jaw was starting to hurt from how hard he clenched his feigned smiled. it was almost painted on at this point. he reached for his martini to relax and take a good look around the room. he couldn't believe the people were welcomed here. it was a welcome invitation and lucius could already count how many people he would remove if it were up to him. though it wasn't the perfect image yet, he and narcissa were known to host some of the best society gatherings. he could walk away from tonight knowing he was still better than whoever threw this one. lucius shook his head when he saw someone approach. "that seat is taken," he said in reference to the empty seat across from him. it wasn't reserved but he would rather not subject himself to mindless small talk. "don't-or sure, by all means. sit," he said, his tone dripping with sarcasm. it seemed the person wasn't going to read the room.

Rooms were meant to be read. For the most part Estelle was happy to comply with such things. Lucius Malfoy and his air of annoyance made that abundantly clear and yet she would not be the witch most people knew her as if in some instances she did not simply go above and beyond to walk her own path. Even if that meant ignoring someone clearly stating that a seat was taken.

"And here I thought we got along. Have I been wrong all along?" Estelle's face held a playful expression, respectful of the other yet very much happy to embark on whatever this push would lead to. A conversation, perhaps. "I may have ignored your first statement, but say the word and I'll respect the next." - @itsluciusmalfoy

"Rita!" Estelle's face lit up when she spotted the blonde across the room, weaving her way through the people to get to her. "You look stunning. Didn't need me to tell you that, did you?" But she was happy to share said compliment. After all, Rita was among those the witch got along with. Loyalty hard won, but once there it would stick.

"Quite the party. Sorry, quite the gala." A gala was just a fancy word for party, except there was an expectation of things to remain sophisticated. Something Estelle was more than happy to support.

remus was lost and he knew it. he took too many turns trying to find another room and his curiosity got the better of him. it was the pureblood's architectural style that was to blame as every corridor looked the same as the other. distantly, he could hear the core of the party in another room but right now, he didn't know how to get back there. remus turned another corner and came face to face with someone near what he could tell was the library. "oh," remus said, the word dropping out of him. "it's not what it looks like."

Boredom and a desire to explore, mixed with the curiosity as some seemed to wander. Just like that Estelle had found herself in the hallways of the manor, walking about as her heels would echo across the floors, wooden and otherwise only to be muted by the carpets in different corners of the place. Until she bumped into someone, a face familiar enough to anyone who paid attention during their time at Hogwarts, shared as it was.

"And what does it look like, Lupin?" Her eyes gave expression enough that her head did not even require to tilt. Of, curious as she was, any answer would be fun to twist. - @its-remuslupin

beck hated events like this. it rotted to his bones in a way that could only be described through social anxiety. and it wasn't because he didn't feel comfortable around people, it was the kind of people he had to make occassional small talk with when he would rather use the cruciatus curse on himself. it was because of that reason that he lost focus in the middle of a conversation, his eye catching on something else in the room. "i'm sorry, you were saying something about...?"

Eyes ever moving across the crowd, trying to find some face within that stuck out. After her return a desire to reconnect had grown, even if things had gone in a much different direction than she'd originally have thought. The very moment her eyes spotted Beck the witch moved, not needing any prompting. If anything, to her, the wizard was a friend; one long overdue for a surprise. Or a reunion.

Her heels echo was swallowed by the crowd as she moved almost effortless, weaving between them only to stop and swat the person away. "You may go now. There's some important business to be discussed. Can't have you be taking up all of a healer's time, can we?" Her eyes didn't leave room as instead she almost pushed between Beck and the person. "You look like you could use some air." Or an escape. Poor Beck looked ready to run and while impression may be wrong, gut feelings hardly ever were. - @beckselwyn

rita was all too confident that this event was happening because of her. if it wasn't because of her and anastasia's sad conversation about death that ended with rita suggesting to throw a party, then none of this would occur. which was why rita felt it was her responsibility to make sure it went well. it wasn't the first event she'd co-hosted or thrown, but she had never seen anything to this degree. rita played nice to some of the other journalists and ministry officials, but her gaze turned wild with panic especially after three pinot blancs. "hey-yeah, you. don't you dare touch that," she said, swatting someone's hand away. "unless you want to be cursed for the next three generations. if you so much as touch it, i will promise i will make that come true and twice over."

Always the shadow even an event like this didn't seem capable of preventing her to move about like a shadow, blending in with the decorations and just enjoying the view. A grin spread across her lips when she heard the other, observed as she seemed swat at some's hand. "I'm more than happy to help with the cursing. They usually pay me to take them off items, but I don't mind doing the opposite."

She shrugged as she stepped closer. "In the name of art." Truly, the art was lovely but not entirely the reason the witch would even consider cursing someone. The effects, though, that was the more interesting part. "I think they got the message." - @itsxrita

If there was one thing Amos liked. It was an excuse for a new outfit. Amos didn't fit much to the trends. Much preferring to do his own thing. One thing he absolutely didn't like to do was blend in. That wasn't to say he didn't still have taste. He could stand out and still look refined. Amos loved playing with textures and colours that he was told were usually more feminine. Not that Amos believed clothes should be assigned genders. Fashion was art to him first and foremost.

Usually Amos got a lot of his stuff from abroad. Simply sending them him measurements. But with the gala there wasn't time. He didn't recognise the woman in the shop which made him a little nervous. "I'm looking for a suit for the gala" he announced as he walked up to the counter "nothing dull like grey or black though, something more fun."

He had a familiar face, from a time before she'd gone off to France and stayed there for the better part of a year. A time when faces still mattered. Perhaps they still did. Her face lit up with a smirk, not caring about the name yet more than happy to work with other. "The Burke Gala, yes. And nothing grey and boring. I can work with that." Her head tilted, her eyes studying him as though he held the answer to the world's most dire questions.

"What about something nice and warm? Pastels, but none that'll wash you out. And no blue. It'll look to odd. Nothing green either." If the witch remembered correctly plenty of the pureblood families had staked their claim onto those colors out of habit and truly, a pastel green would look very odd in a sea of serpents. "Lilac? Lavender. Or,... what about rosé, pink? Burgundy." The last one not a pastel yet something she could see on the other just fine. "A specific style?" Her finger hovered near his chest. - @dashing-diggory

After some small talk with coworkers she had absolutely no interest in talking to, Marlene found her way back to the bar, where she was glad to find a familiar face. "Oh Mare, enjoying yourself?" She wondered a she nudged her friend's arm softly. "I know this is not our preferred setting, but we should steal the dancefloor later, don't you think?"

"Oh, I don't care about the setting." Mary grinned at her friend, shaking her head in amusement. "If I want to dance, and I do, then nothing is going to stop me. Us, in this case." A nod toward the floating trays. "And they have plenty of refreshments circling about. Well, refreshments. Drinks, really. If anything goes down I can just claim their drinks were too heavy."

Any drink was heavy if one had too many of them. That fact made it rather easy to lie about it, when technically some truth was hidden inside. "I hope we do find some of the others. Some of the people around are rather... Snobbish." She didn't mean to sound harsh. Simply a different type of people. - @mk-marlene

Only once in her life had Mary ever been to such an event, not counting the yule ball during her time at Hogwarts. And such a place, grand as it was had the best of gardens. Ten minutes she'd allowed herself to just wander the ground and peek through the glass into what she hoped was the greenhouse. Of course, entering would have been a whole other thing, though she'd been tempted.

"I won't tell if you won't." Mary chuckled, glad that if she had to run into someone while sneaking back inside through the libraries doors to the garden, it had to be Remus. - @its-remuslupin

before her mother could get her hands on her again and force her to search for a 'fine gentleman', evelyn decided to get lost in this place. she walked around, admiring the private collection that was at display. evelyn stopped in front of one of the paintings and just contemplated it for a long time.

"absolutely magnificent..." she murmured practically breathless and to no one in particular. except that there was someone standing next to her that she failed to notice.

Somewhere in the crowd her family was mingling in the crowd, chatting with others. Elsewhere those she considered her chosen family were walking about, perhaps admiring art like she was that very moment. And yet again outside, so she was sure, her brother was sulking about while attempting to escape a party he simply he could not run from.

"A lover of art, hm?" Hestia smiled softly. Somehow the idea of her fellow auror being an art appreciator fit. "That one's lovely, though." - @evelynfawley

Any gala that had a bar or a section for drinks and refreshments of any kind was one Emmeline Vance could get behind. Primarily cause it was something to do when one seemed intend on trying to avoid mingling until a familiar face came along, but also because drinks of any kind usually made whatever small talk came her way a lot easier. Her hand reached out for one of the drinks from the trays floating about when from the corner of her eye she spotted that familiar face; something worth turning around for.

"Is someone in need of a drink?" Her eyebrows shot up. "I would have thought you'd be out there, chasing the thrill." Whatever kind that was; flirting, gambling or perhaps a conversation about quidditch. Her face lit up with a smirk at the thought.

"You clean up nicely." A compliment, one like so many the witch had dropped before yet fully believing the words. "Should I be thanking you for accompanying me to this event?" She would, regardless. Manners were still very much part of who she was. That, and there was no harm in thanking someone. Ludo was, surprisingly, untainted by her previous chaos, had seemed playful enough. Far more than she'd thought at first.

Estelle glanced around the place. "Come take a walk with me? Take a look at the art?" What was the harm?

How long had it been since she'd seen the other? Time always seemed to fly when one was having a good time, or simply when inconvenient. Hiding had been a chaotic choice, one desperately needed yet the very moment she laid eyes on the brunette, a smile spread as she walked up after fetching some champagne off a floating tray; two flutes.

"I believe I owe you this one." And more. "At the very least, consider this the start of me making up for all the lost time." It was good to see Sabrina, really. Any of her friends. It was moments like these when the witch noticed just how much she'd missed them.
