Okay 6 am rant.
Saw a MJ discussing MJ vs Freddie with someone, and usually, these debates don’t matter to me, because music taste in my opinion is highly subjective, especially when it comes to two singers as accomplished as MJ and Freddie, who sang different kinds of songs to begin with.
But there a point where I draw the line.
This person and their friend/mutual were talking about how Freddie was not nearly as good as MJ, and it was… fine until then. I mean, as I said, I disagree that legends should be compared, and I do not believe that there is an absolute judgement which says who was better than who. For me, Freddie will always be better. The key words here being for me.
But what they subsequently said, was this:
Dude. Comment on the music all you want. Comment on his vocal ability if you wish. But do not, do not put the blame of his death on him. “Putting everyone around him at risk?” “Throwing caution to the wind?” “Living dishonestly?” Do you even fucking know how he died? He died of an illness which was unknown at the time he got it. He did not fucking know. What exactly are you calling careless here? The fact that he slept with a lot of people? Didn’t many straight men sleep around as well? What’s the difference here? Of course, we all know the difference.
And bruh, if only you knew how much Queen meant to Freddie, the sacrifices that he made to ensure that nothing bad would come to the band. He literally had to hide who he was so that the band wouldn’t be ostracised. He didn’t want Queen to be a victim of homophobia. You really do not know what you’re talking about.
“We see who outlived who”. Wow, that’s… I don’t even need to say how problematic that is. Way to pin the blame of a person’s untimely death due to a vicious disease that affected everyone equally on the victim.
And how tf can you even compare traumas?
You know, you can say why you like a particular singer without making personal and insulting remarks against the other. It only weakens your argument when you do.
