Geeking out over Fugitoid Frenzy #2: a review | SPOILER WARNING

Ok, I gotta be honest, actual PEAK no complaints, questions or even minor nitpicks this time around!

• Somehow the art got even better the whole sequence of the turtles fighting Zog and Honeycutt running away to get help has some of the best paneling I've ever seen! By the way - oh my god, Zog's design is crazy good, love me some gentle giant. Also Fugitoid got noticeably more expressive and idc if that ruins the perception of him being a robot what I care about is that it looks really cute!

• On a completely opposite note - loved to see some classic Honeycutt identity crisis too. The line he said to Lonae after she asked him if he's really there hit hard, what a valid crashout.

• Speaking of cute - even though it was a little jarring to see Splinter supporting Honeycutt the same way Honeycutt himself supported Donnie in IDW and 2012 TMNT - it was absolutely adorable and nearly moved me to tears. Shoutout to Mayhem/Tales Splinter actually acting like a good father! The found family energy in this issue is off the charts in general, like I already said in previous post - love the way the turtles got their new friend's back.

In conclusion: I already enjoyed the last issue but this one is a step up in every way, a solid 10/10 for me! can't believe I missed the last day of issue 6 pre-orders shiiiit

There are quite a few anime references in the Fugitoid Frenzy arc and some are more obvious than others. This panel was definitely inspired by the iconic moment in One Piece when the Straw Hats walk to Arlong Park. The turtles' fight with Zog takes place in New York's City Hall Park.

Geeking out over Fugitoid Frenzy #1: a review | SPOILER WARNING

Going into this comic I was excited yet skeptical - after all, this is Andrew Joustra's debut comic, and the latest Fugitoid iteration we got (from The Last Ronin) was...awful. But, I'm happy to say, that I enjoyed this comic a lot!

Though, before I talk about all the things I loved about it, I have to address the elephant in the room - this iteration of Zayton Honeycutt is 19 instead of the usual 50-60. And, personally, I don't mind this change - but it raises a lot of unanswered questions. As a viewer, I always assumed that Honeycutt was all alone in this because he's a middle aged man and his family is probably dead at this point... but here? You're telling me it's been weeks since Zayton's disappearance and the only person who was looking for him is his crush/colleague? What about the boy's family? Legal guardians? Police? There's been a huge explosion at the EPF with one casualty and nobody except for the local reporter girl investigated the case? Unfortunately I just can't suspend my disbelief... but I can give the writer the benefit of the doubt and hope these questions will be answered in the next two issues!

Here's some minor nitpicks, but don't take them to heart, because they're just that - nitpicks: April saying "sus" felt extremely outdated, and I don't really see why the relationship between Zayton and Lonae had to be romantic and not just platonic

Sorry for being a bit negative - here's all the stuff I did like!

• As always, Louie Joyce art is gorgeous! It goes incredibly well with TOTTMNT character and background designs, creating some of the most dynamic and colourful frames I've ever seen in TMNT comics! Also love how all the flashback with Honeycutt have a pixel framing to them

• Honeycutt himself is very well written! It combines plotlines from both Mirage and IDW comics in a clever way, making subtle references to previous installations to this franchise! It's clear that Joustra is a long time Fugitoid fan - just like me! - and knows exactly how to handle the character with respect. His backstory was beautifully illustrated (and, again - wonderfully written!) and both Zayton and Sal designs look adorable! My friend also said that Donnie mentioning "Ghost in the shell" is a thematic parallel to Honeycutt's story and, I gotta admit - that's a smart writing decision!

• This was a great start for the new arc! With return of so many classic characters, I'm excited to see what more this story has in store! Can't wait to see the triceratons!

Last but not least - here's all the aforementioned references to previous iterations you might have missed!

In conclusion: incredible work for the writer's debut comic! 8/10, can't wait for my physical copy to arrive!

Geek out over "Fugitoid Frenzy" #3: a review | SPOILER WARNING

note: this one is a lot less structured then the previous ones so you'll just have to bare with me

In short - I liked it! A lot! But, as always, I'm gonna talk a bit about things that bugged me first:

• It's nice to see the two talk their feelings through, but I genuinely don't get what Zayton's apologizing for here?...

• As promised, this issue did answer some questions I had before - which is great, don't get me wrong - but now I have some new ones. Honeycutt doesn't want to put his family in danger (makes sense) and went into hiding in a robot hotel (again, makes sense) but Zog is there too I guess?...Did everyone just assume he's a mutant so he gets to have a job too? Does everyone think he's a dinosaur animatronic and that's why he's at the robot hotel? Even the investigator April's talking to is more concerned about the existence of a robot with human consciousness than the unadressed triceratops in the room

Speaking of the robot hotel!

I'm so glad Zayton got a happy ending he deserved! Not gonna lie, I was fully ready to cry a river because of that TMNT 2003 vagueposting by the comic's writer AND all the possible outcomes of the situation me and friends made up in our DMs...we were so scared and cynical we forgot that "robot jobs" can actually be wholesome 😭

Anyway! Onto more things I enjoyed:

• OMG METALHEAD CAMEO I was so glad to see him, I wish he got a chance to fight alongside Honeycutt but it's ok

• Thank you Louie Joyce for giving us skater boy Zayton I didn't know I even needed it but now I know I do

• Some really nice references on the background of that page too, like "Mirage Dogs" and "Chet's toy store" (iykyk)

• That part where General Blanque says "You couldn't just follow simple directions. How very human of you" is SO good

• I already said that before, but I'll say it again - that ending was really wholesome! I'm sure nothing bad will happen to Honeycutt again and he won't be kidnapped again by some other villain/delusional

Genuinely my honest reaction this morning MY GUUUUUYYYYY

Final score for the whole comic: 10/10 (with multiple bonus points just because it greatly improved my mood) thank god my copy is FINALLY arriving soon (yes. the issue four. yes only now. i know how insane it must sound to my american followers 😭)
