i've already ordered the book after seeing the trailer :) why's it so important to you btw?

i’m going to go ahead and put a tl;dr to start :3 oh! and i hope you got the author’s preferred text edition! 

okay, so my first introduction to Neil Gaiman was through the Sandman series–which is absolutely mercurial and fantastic and i wholly recommend as well–and i devoured it, loved it, yadda yadda. year or so later, came upon Good Omens, which he co-wrote with the late great Terry Pratchett, and again i loved it, its a gem and terribly witty and lives up to the hype. when i happened upon American Gods, i hadn’t heard anything about it before, but true to my #aesthetic nature, the title caught me. i love mythology, lore, the occult, any sort of deeply rich cultural practice/rites/narratives/etc, as well as the various regional “American gothic” genres, and so of course this book stood out to me and i was immediately drawn in. 

and it exceeded every lofty expectation i held. as someone who wants so desperately to be a writer, a novel like American Gods is like…the moon to a kid at space camp. if i can ever write anything even in the same zipcode as American Gods; if i can write something that has even half the depth and complexity and nuance, then i’ll die happy regardless if it make me a dime. like, i don’t know of any other book that brings together so many different elements, handles them all beautifully, and manages to tell a deeply personal and intimate story that’s also so universal. its tangible and visceral and just capital A American in every way, and like Shadow, it puts you on this journey that has you living moment by moment and moving in and out of reality and mythos. 

so i guess my point is its so important to me because its not just a perfect novel, its MY perfect novel, you know? every time i read it i just think christ, this literally has everything i could want in a piece of narrative and i want to exist in these pages.
