The truth was Caroline and Tyler broke up because he bit her and she couldn’t trust him not to do it again. She just wanted to feel safe. She’d been forced into this violent, absolutely terrifying supernatural world completely unprepared — so, was it too much to ask that she could at least feel safe with her lover?

            You felt safe with Klaus. That traitorous thought made Caroline scream out loud in the confines of her car, and the anguished noise was so jarring that she accidentally jerked the steering wheel until the tires screeched and swerved along the highway. Klaus was not safe. Klaus was the villain and that’s all he’d ever be, she reminded herself angrily. It didn’t matter how many ponies he drew or earnest conversations they had — Klaus was NOT in the picture and had NOTHING to do with the breakup with Tyler.

            She would never fall for the bad guy again. Damon had taught her that much.

Chapter 4: The Last Thing She’d Give

Unexpectedly (and embarrassingly) she could feel herself tearing up over Klaus’ situation. She quickly busied herself by scooping a fistful of broken tortilla chips into the delicious, gloppy nacho toppings and cramming them in her mouth before she panicked and started telling Klaus all of her most embarrassing childhood stories just to make him feel better.

            Frowning, Klaus asked worriedly, “Are you still melancholy over your singing poppet movie?”

            “No. And you know damn well it’s The Muppet Movie we watched last night, and I told you I can’t ever make it through Kermit singing ‘Rainbow Connection’ without bawling.”
