I love what I do, now if only I could earn a living out of it lol. Over the tens years I have been doing this I have had the privilege and the honour of getting to know many of the creators in the industry and I am so glad that I have too. Because otherwise I would probably have been in the dark when it comes to these. I am so thrilled with these stories and that they don't seem to be stopping anytime soon. This one however needs a longer arc to be told in, we need more of these characters as we continue to learn what happened in the town of Haddonville and the crazy coincidence that ends the story.
Also the opening and closing of this book is simply stellar, Brockton gets to shine for a moment but honestly it's Jason who steals the show. Not only is the work phenomenal but it's what we see inside the television for a head that's got me excited. It feels like mixed media to me and I cannot get enough of it! Also that we do have these much like the best hosts in the horror business introducing and exiting the story is perfectly done. It takes something ordinary and makes it extraordinary.
The way the story is being told is amazingly well done with the story & plot development as the sequence of events unfold and how the reader learns information. The character development is strong and well executed as we get an immediate feel for who the people we meet are and what makes them tick. With the pacing we see how the twists and turns play out and even one of those great reveal moments that gets the heart's blood pumping. The way this is structured and how we get this immediate like or dislike of the characters as well as only partially understanding of what's really going on here leaves us wanting so much more.
The main story interiors here are very nicely done. The linework is fantastic and how we see the varying weights being utilised to bring out the attention to detail is well rendered. Also I am somewhat impressed with how many backgrounds are being utilised within these pages as they enhance the moments and bring a nice sense of size and scope to the book. Then there is the creative way to draw in breasts without getting a more adult rating. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a good, strong eye for storytelling. The colour work here is also nicely done and there's a nice bit of utilised the colours and their hues and tones to create the shading and shadow work.
Not going to lie was hoping Ernest was going to somehow be strung up and naked for us but alas that kind of insult to injury didn't happen. Still I really like this little town that we've been introduced to and I do want to see more. Including of the women who ended this particular story. Shawn is good at that though, leaving us wanting more, and here he once again demonstrates his skill, ability and talent for getting the reader to become engaged and invested into a story. One and done aren't the easiest stories to craft but he makes it seem effortless. Now if only he was back writing Puppet Master stories.
