You know what doesn’t get talked about enough....?

My better half was a highschool teacher for 8 years. He took this last year off after losing another kid to gun violence. Neither of the kids he lost was to school-shooting gun violence, for the record. But the shocking loss of these two was intensified by a mounting and palpable terror.

School shootings could happen anywhere. Gun violence happens everywhere.

And my better half, in the classroom he would be expected to be a human shield.

The thing you hope you would never have to do, the thing we’re fairly sure he would do if he had too.... thoughts that keep us awake at night... we know that other people think of that as a requirement. A given.

Educated to be a teacher, intentionally. Dedicated to the kids. Paid a forgettable wage and fully expected to die in the event of the (now) easily imaginable.

He didn’t become a teacher for this nightmare.
