You made me curious enough to check out welcome to Plathville and I am HOOKED. I have a whole bunch of thoughts and I actually took notes because I was so eager to talk about it with you.
- When they asked Lydia (I think?) what she does for fun and she said she didnāt know, my heart broke a little bit. Made me think of Captain America: Winter Soldier when Cap says that he doesnāt know what makes him happy.
- The parents saying that Moriah is wired differently made me hopeful but as the episode went on I realized that wasnāt as accepting as I first thought.
- Maybe Iām mis-remembering but have I seen people hating on Ethan here? I think heās adorable. Heās all wide eyed like a golden retriever and I just want to watch him try new things all day long. The bit where he said he kept his first can of Coke made me sayĀ āAwww!ā out loud even though I was watching alone with headphones on.
- My main thought watching this was that the Plaths (the parents mostly) seem to live their lives based in fear. Theyāre very literally hiding themselves away because of their fears of all the bad things in the world, and theyāre locking themselves away from all the good parts too. It just makes me sad, and if you want to be Biblical, thereās a part in 1 John 4 that says something likeĀ āThere is no fear in love, for perfect love drives out fear. The one who fears has not been made perfect in love.ā I had to memorize that at one point as a kid and it stuck with me but Iām not going to promise thatās a direct NIV quote mostly because Iām not picky enough to look it up.Ā
- I love watching Moriah try new things even more than Ethan. It makes me so happy to see her try things and I started wondering how sheād react to other things. I hope we see a lot more of that but Iām worried that the next couple episodes are going to be M and her parents struggling with her feeling so changed by her trip.
- The LGBT bit was so precious to me. It makes me think of what one of my friends said when her partner started transitioning and I was worried Iād still call him by his old name etc. It was something likeĀ āYouāre gonna mess up and say the wrong thing sometimes but all that matters is that youāre trying to get it right.ā Moriah has so much to learn but sheās curious and respectful so it doesnāt matter that she doesnāt know everything yet. How could she?
- Ethanās story about having the talk with his mom was hilarious and horrifying. Every now and then I had moments where I remembered that these are real people that actually are living and feeling these things and it made me sad. Itās a super funny story when theyāre just characters but itās really upsetting that that was the extent of his sex ed.
- I can not wait for more episodes. Iām really interested in seeing how the dynamic with Olivia progresses. I keep reminding myself that at 21 she really canāt be expected to be flawless at negotiating in-law issues as complicated as she has but I do feel like she maybe makes things harder on herself.Ā
- Anyway, thatās all Iāve got for now but oh my gosh I canāt wait for more. Send me a message if you want to talk about it more!!
