Well, damn... it seems like I missed the entire lifecycle of the this band, not even becoming aware of their existence until 7 years after they broke up.  They seem loud enough that if I had just walked out on my back porch on any particularly still evening, I might have heard the squee of feedback from way off in the distance.

Now, they hold a place of respect in my collection along with a number of other noisy Chicago-based bands, such as Shellac, Big Black, The Laughing Hyenas and Screeching Weasel.

Functional Blackouts - The Severed Tongue Speaks For Everyone [2006, Criminal IQ]

Taking cues from Devo, the Ramones, Butthole Surfers, and Alien Sex Fiend, the Functional Blackouts sound like a Japanese punk band with an abiding love for the style of the '80s, as on one track, "Kamikaze!", which clenches in the chorus with a yelped-out "K-k-k-k-k-k-k-kamikaze!" repeated alongside a choppy guitar.  That sensation of fast, snappy punches is maintained through the album's 14 tracks, with cool progressions and riffs that are tossed away after a few bars.  Recommended for fans of Gauze, The Stalin, and Detestation.
