Music theory people: is there a way to talk about notes outside of a key, the way there is for chords? (As in, we can say talk about the IV-I chord progression without specifying key, so is there a way to talk about a melodic motif without specifying the key?)

Now that I know a little bit about functional harmony and traditional Western tonality I find it hard to write music that isn’t traditionally tonal, with a clear key center established in the traditional ways using functional harmony.

Not that there’s anything wrong with CPP harmony but it’s weird that the instant I learn the basics of a certain harmonic framework everything I do conforms to it. Maybe this is a stage beginners learning music theory often go through.

New blog post: Harmonic Context in Ear Training (and the frustration of App Store reviews)

Most of the time I have it pretty easy on the review front: the ear training apps I've made get mostly postive reviews, and I get to feel like what I've created is helping musicians get more out of music.

  Sometimes, though, the reviews come in negative, and it takes a lot of resolve not to let that ruin my day.

  The most recent negative review raised some interesting questions (as well as my hackles) so I tried a new form of therapy: responding!

If you aren't or weren't a music major, you most likely wil not get how awesome this is.

It kind of reminds me of when I used to draw cartoons of opera seria to help me remember the styles of the music.

Mozart is one of my least favorite composers to perform/play, but it is nice to listen to sometimes.

(in other countries besides the US, do they not use lowercase letters to denote minor keys?)
