Fusion Kitchen used to be called Mom, Please – not sure why they changed the name but whatever it is  called, they are serving amazing Ukrainian food in a charming, cozy setting very close to LACMA. Order at the counter and get a number. They’ll bring the food to you.

Food: 5/5 –  Breakfast, salads, crepes, pancakes (syrnyky), dumplings, sandwiches, and pastries (eclairs, cakes, cookies). The housemade potato varenyky were divine – dumplings filled with smooth mashed potatoes, topped with parsley, mushroom sauce, and sour cream on the side. The skin was thicker and a bit chewy.  

Coffee: 4/5 – Coffee, matcha, and other drinks. The lemonade on the sweeter side but still with tartness

Wi-fi: 5/5 – Free, unlimited, password by the register.

Ambiance: 5/5 – Cozy with white walls, woven pendant lamps, light wood, mismatched tables and chairs, outdoo]r patio

Noise: 4/5 – Quiet music, people were quiet too

Plugs: 1/5 – Only one is accessible

Parking: 3/5 – It’s by LACMA, so it can be challenging. I found 2 hour free parking nearby.

Comfort: 4/5 – Some chairs are padded, some are not

Bathroom: 5/5 – Two restrooms with door codes

Art: 3/5 – None, they have mirrors on the walls

Tips: They sell frozen food (crepes, pancakes, dumplings) too. Breakfast is served till 1 PM, some items are offered all day.

Fusion Kitchen used to be called Mom, Please – not sure why they changed the name but whatever it is  called, they are serving amazing Ukrainian food in a charming, cozy setting very close to LACMA. It’s hard to find good Eastern European food around here. There’s one Polish restaurant in Glassell Park and a few Russian ones – I can’t think of another Ukrainian place other than Fusion Kitchen. Fusion Kitchen feels more contemporary and the food is obviously cooked with a lot of love. Just look at how beautiful they’ve folded their varenyky and pelmeni.

There’s a breakfast menu (breakfast is served till 1 PM), salads, crepes, pancakes (syrnyky), dumplings, sandwiches, and housemade pastries (eclairs, cakes, cookies). They sell frozen food (crepes, pancakes, dumplings) too. They had some Ukrainian treats that I’ve never tried before.

Order at the counter and get a number. They’ll bring the food to you.

Varenyky with potatoes ($19.50): These were the best, better than the pierogi I’ve had. The dough was smoother and chewier, the mashed potatoes smoother. I also loved the mushroom sauce with sliced mushrooms, the sprinkle of parsley, the contrast of the cold sour cream. So good!

Lemonade: a little sweet but still had some tang

There’s free wi-fi and the décor is so cozy and cute. The music wasn’t too jarring either.

I have to get the cabbage rolls next.

The fusion kitchen

The fusion kitchen is the result of a mixture of different cooking styles, techniques and world tastes. The base of it is eastern and western cooking techniques, which are mixed with northern and southern ingredients. In this completely unique cooking style different ingredients spices and cooking traditions and techniques from at least two different continents are mixed to make a new dish. These ‘requirements’ make that the fusion kitchen isn’t as easy for every cook. A mistake is easily made. A cook has to have the necessary inspiration but also sharp senses to make good combinations that mix well. And not all cooks have the ability to mix the French kitchen with the Chinese, Italian or Mexican kitchen.

When exactly the fusion kitchen was originated is hard to say. This cooking style could be found for centuries in Australia and America, but also the Indian kitchen. The Austrian cook Wolfgang Puck (08/07/1949) is seen as one of the pioneer of the fusion kitchen. He combined the French and Chinese cooking styles in the sixties.
