i don't recognize faces
so when i saw you for the first time
i thought you might be someone else
someone whose teeth gnash in glee when i cry,
whose nails dig and make me bleed
apologies for things i didn't do
you turned out to be
a whole different kind of monster.
i don’t recognize faces,
so when you grabbed my hand like it meant nothing
(because it was nothing)
i thought that this was something
beautiful, something new, all mine
and it was only for that moment,
that i saw how it could seem like nothing,
because it was nothing, at least to you
in the golden rays of dawn he looks a little more like an angel than my corrupted soul is comfortable with
i look at him and think: if you will be my apollo i will be your icarus
i study the planes of his face and think: i will fly for you and i will fall for you
in the dancing light of sunset he looks too much like a hero for me to keep him locked in the cage of my heart
i look at him and consider: would it be better for you if i freed you
i ponder the slope of his shoulders and consider: could i survive such devastation
in the neon glow of midnight he looks just dangerous enough to be the other piece of me
i look at him and wonder: can even the heavenly dance in the dark
i admire the curve of his neck and wonder: will he stay long enough to find out
i am my own darkness but you are my light. (slc 09/18/17)

She had always let the world control her. She never even imagined that she could control the world back – but she could feel its power thrumming through her veins, feel her connection to the earth on a physical level. She could feel the world’s heart pulse.
He knew something wasn’t the same when he was four. It wasn’t until Carson turned six he began to care. At seven, he knew it was wrong. He stayed, despite it all. His family were here. They stood behind him. They urged him forward. They carried him through his mother’s death at age twelve. He remained until he was fifteen.
At age fifteen, the walls became higher and the bars became stronger. Carson Kalis fought back, and they pushed back. At age sixteen he left, and by seventeen he was C a r s o n C a l e .
This is for the @futurenovelistnet member event listed here!
Joseph hadn’t always known he was a witch.
As a child, Joseph loved to look to the stars. He would gave fondly to the twinkling lights above, wishing and begging for a way to reach high enough to touch them. He was 8 when he first began to reach higher. He hadn’t understood at the time why exactly the sky, the stars, had suddenly seemed closer, and the instant he heard his mother shout, the sky dropped away from him.
His mother wouldn’t tell him why she had shouted at him, and he wouldn’t find out why until he was 13. His mother and father had left Joseph and his brother alone while they went to work, and the elder was trying to entertain his 9 year old brother. It was difficult at first, but the instant Joseph realized he was levitating a ball without touching it... he seemed to catch Lillian’s attention.
Joseph had made his brother promise not to tell their parents, and it had been easy to convince the child. The two kept it a secret- a secret between brothers- for years, years, and more years. The instant Lillian went into high school, the instant he met the young boy who insisted his name was Roderich, it became harder to keep Joseph’s powers a secret. Lillian told Roderich everything, and Joseph told Lillian nearly everything.
It wasn’t until many years later that Joseph found out why exactly Roderich had believed Lillian when he had told the boy about his older brother with magic powers. It wasn’t until Joseph, himself, was being targeted by a member of Roderich’s family that he found out how happy Roderich had been to know someone else who had magic. Though Roderich’s magic wasn’t the same as Joseph’s, he appreciated the boy’s acceptance and his introductions to the two people who soon became Joseph’s most trusted companions.
Joseph would look back on those early days, the days when he knew nothing of his place in the world, nothing of the impact he would have on those who held such an immense amount of power. Joseph would remember those days, and he would miss them. He would feel the pain coursing through his veins any time his enemy’s curse would surge greater in strength, and Joseph would wish... he would wish and he would beg for the chance to turn back time and forget some of the things he learned which had put him in this situation. He would beg for the chance to live normally once more.
But living normally is never written into the fate of a witch.
