“...And you’re sure it wasn’t just-”
“Experimental error?” Chris asked, watching as Piper burned a hole into the rug. “We’d thought about it but at this point we’ve redone the experiment more than I can count.”
“Then I’ve got nothing.” Piper threw her hands up. “You’re right, it’s unsolvable. The math doesn’t make any sense; if anything the opposite should be true.” she huffed.
“And here I thought the great Dr. Kingsley was going to be our salvation.” Chris smiled, amusement clear in his eyes.
“Dr. Kingsley, huh? I like the sound of that.” she laughed, falling into the space beside him. She sighed, crossing her arms. “I don’t even know where to start.”
“If it were easy we would’ve figured it out by now.” Chris patted her shoulder reassuringly. “And hey, you haven’t been working on it for very long either.”
“I know.” She said, leaning back against the chair. “It’s just frustrating that after a week of studying the notes the only plausible theory I have is aliens.”
“Aliens?” Chris chuckled with the prick of his eyebrow.
“Or brain washing.” Piper continued, trying unsuccessfully to keep a straight face. “Either way Dobson’s in on it.”
“I see...” He replied, trying his best to match Piper’s serious tone. “I’ll look into it.”
They weren’t able to keep up the deadpan tone for very long before laughter got the best of them.

A sneak peek at FutureSim Lab that I am renovating for my NSB Challenge workplace for Zada. <3
Piper stifled another yawn, taking a sip of her third cup of coffee that morning. “I know she’s Satan and everything,” she said, keeping a watchful eye on the door, “but what kind of monster makes someone wake up this early?”
Chris chuckled, rubbing his face in a desperate attempt to stay awake. “You know Dobson…” he sighed. “She’s getting desperate.”
“Having slumps in an investigation is normal. This? This is ungodly.”
“Not for her…” He responded, mouth pulled sideways. “It’s been months without a break, it’s starting to get to her.”
“I just don’t get why I have to be here.” Piper groaned into her mug. “You? Sure. But me? I’m not even allowed within 30 feet of the equipment.”
“Well someone’s got to get us more coffee.” Chris teased, nudging her with his shoulder.
Piper shot him a glare. “I just with I could do something.”
Chris glanced around the empty cafeteria. “You know…” he spoke, running his finger over the rim of his mug, “If it means that much to you I could probably slip you the notes on what we have so far.”
“Really?” Piper shot up, suddenly alert.
He nodded, smiling as Piper’s face lit up. “Off the record, obviously. We can tell her if you find anything; I doubt she’d give me hell if you helped make advances.”
Piper opened her mouth to respond, but stopped herself short as the sound of approaching footsteps echoed through the hall.
Thank you. She mouthed, mind racing at the prospect of a second opportunity.

“Piper and I were just taking a quick lunch break.” Christopher responded nonchalantly, taking another spoon-full of his meal.
“Surely a loose interpretation of the word ‘quick.’” she narrowed her eyes, voice metallic and cool. “Henley, if you’re done I’d like your help back at the lab.”
“Sure, be there in a few.” Chris returned her gaze evenly, offering a polite smile. It occurred to Piper that his apparent bravery might be a sign of insanity.
“As for you Kingsley,” the senior scientist shifted her focus, snapping Piper back to the present “it’s about time you tended to the cell line.”
Piper glanced in Chris’s attempting to emulate his calm demeanor. “As soon as I finish I’ll-”
“Kingsley.” Dobson cut through her sentence, voice slowing to a controlled crawl. “The thing about cell lines is that need to be tended to on a regular basis, regardless of any capricious tendencies you might suffer from.” She looked down the bridge of her nose, lips pressed into a thin line. “Get on it.”
Piper averted her gaze. “Yes, Dr. Dobson.”
“While you’re at it go tend to the garden, the plants seem to be wilting more than usual today… Guess someone’s been forgetting to water them.”
Piper huffed, shooting Chris a defeated smile.

“Alright so we begin our tour with the weapons of biological warfare.” Christopher began, donning his best tour guide voice. “Everything in this upcoming room is deadly so tread with caution.”
Piper perked up, craning her neck to try and see around the corner. “Really?”
“Absolutely. Welcome… To the cafeteria.” he laughed. “I’d bring my own lunches if I were you… Unless you want to live off of petrified muffins and mystery meat.”
“Noted.” Piper chuckled.

“Piper Kingsley…” the receptionist repeated back to herself, finger tapping quickly against the fluorescent keyboard. “Alrighttt so you’ll be working under Dr. Dobson…”
Piper stitched her eyebrows together, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear. Under?
“...She should be right this way if you’ll just follow me.”

Though she’d been hearing descriptions of the near mythical FutureSim Lab for years none of them had ever properly captured just how massive it was. The whole structure seemed to grow from the terrain and, with no other building competing for a spot in the skyline, the lab loomed as steadfast and unending as the dessert itself.
Piper paused, taking it all in. Any of the residual doubt she’d felt that morning gave way to sheer giddiness as she made her way the barbed fences.
