san diego mythology meme (1/?): baird’s sandpiper
they fight one night, throats hoarse from screaming, eyes dry and cheeks wet with streaming tears. she goes to the water, hurls a diamond into the sea, heart clenching with bitterness as the waves bear it away. she sits on the waterline, the tide rising and ebbing around her, skin pickled by the salt. as the sun comes up, she returns home again. he never does.
and she goes back to the water, contrite. scours the beach, rushing to each glint in the sand, begging the waves to return the gem to her. maybe if it returns, then he will too.
the sun beats, the waves crash, and she stays at the water. her legs darken under the sun, and grow thinner as she refuses to eat, to rest, to leave the shore. eventually, the sun takes pity on her, and her burned skin is covered in white plumage, and as she crouches closer and closer to the sand, her shadow is smaller than a seagull’s. her tears still darken her cheeks.
