❝ If you asked most of the population of Kildare Island about August Cullen, they probably wouldn’t have been able to tell you who she was. Not because she didn’t live there - she did, a proud Pogue who lived on the island year-round - or because of any malice they harbored towards her; most of them genuinely wouldn’t have any idea who they were being asked about, at least not if you just mentioned August by name. To most of the island, August was just a waitress at the local diner who could occasionally be heard singing in the kitchen or the quiet girl in the back of class who only ever talked to a few people, someone they would know by her face but didn’t know anything real about, and forgot the second she turned away from them.

There was so much the people of Kildare didn’t know or just ignored about August Cullen - the fact that she lived with her grandparents because her father was in jail, the fact that her favorite musical changed every day, the fact that she’d never kissed anyone but frequently daydreamed about what Sarah Cameron’s lips might feel like - and honestly, that was fine by her. She had her friends, the same people who’d practically been her siblings since elementary school, and she didn’t care who else knew her name. Her friends, her little gang of Pogues, were her world, as was the little island she called home.

There was JJ, the only one who sang along with her when she randomly started to belt out her favorite show tunes; John B, whom August would frequently pester for information about Sarah Cameron since he worked for her father; Pope, the first one she’d come out to when they were just eleven, the one who knew all her secrets; and Kiara, her first crush, the only girl on the island who’d ever wanted to be friends with August. These people were her home, her everything, and August was more than content to spend all her days hanging out with them, working shifts at the diner, and occasionally performing at the local bar when the owner would let her, living in her own little happy bubble and trying to ignore the fact that her friends might not stay with her on the island forever.

But this summer is already gearing up to pop August’s happy little bubble - John B is determined to uncover the mystery behind his father’s disappearance, and though August is willing to follow him and the rest of her friends anywhere, she doesn’t exactly anticipate the path that mission will lead them down. Suddenly, the Pogues seem poised to uncover a conspiracy that engulfs the whole of Kildare Island, Sarah Cameron has started spending more time with the Pogues (and August doesn’t know whether to be grateful for that or not), and August and her friends are being shot at. Multiple times. By guys they don’t even know.

This summer is definitely turning out to be an adventure, the likes of which August and the rest of the Pogues have never seen off of a movie screen. Whether everything will turn out to be worth it? August supposes that remains to be seen.

(And no, her conclusion will have nothing to do with whether or not she finally gets to find out what Sarah Cameron’s lips feel like, shut up, JJ.) ❞

𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐑𝐎𝐃𝐔𝐂𝐈𝐍𝐆… 𝐌𝐘 𝐎𝐔𝐓𝐄𝐑 𝐁𝐀𝐍𝐊𝐒 𝐎𝐑𝐈𝐆𝐈𝐍𝐀𝐋 𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐑𝐀𝐂𝐓𝐄𝐑, 𝐂𝐀𝐋𝐋𝐔𝐌 𝐓𝐀𝐍𝐀𝐊𝐀

❝ Unlike most of the kids on Kildare Island, Callum Tanaka had not lived there his whole life. His family had been coming to the island during the summer since before he was born, certainly, but for the first six years of his life, it had just been during the summer. As few as they were, he actually had childhood memories that didn’t take place on the island, ones that happened before his younger sister was born during one summer trip and his father had decided that that was a good enough reason to move the family there full-time because why not? His daughter had been born there, and it wasn’t as if they couldn’t afford it.

So Callum and his family had been permanent Kildare residents for the past ten years, and now the majority of Callum’s memories were of sneaking out his bedroom window to watch the sea at midnight, steering clear of fights between his fellow Figure Eight residents, or “Kooks,” and Kildare’s less well-off residents who called themselves “Pogues,” as much as possible, and memorizing which classrooms at school will be empty when so that he can have his panic attacks in peace. His best memories contain one Sarah Cameron, the girl who shared her lunch with him one day in fifth grade and has been his best friend ever since - but even those memories are becoming harder to make now that Sarah spends most of her time with her asshole boyfriend and the other popular kids.

Still, there is one more person in Callum's life that hasn't left him with bad memories... even if it's only because he doesn't even know Callum exists. JJ Maybank, a member of a group of so-called Pogues, a boy with golden hair and a smile like sunshine, has captivated Callum from the very first moment he saw him, but not only have they never actually interacted, Callum knows very clearly that JJ does not like Kooks. And so, for the past two years, Callum has had to content himself with watching JJ from afar, watching him having fun with his group of friends and trying to force himself to accept that the other boy's sunshine smile will never be directed at him.

But all of a sudden, Sarah is drawn closer to a Pogue named John B, wanting to help him and his friends uncover the mystery of a compass left behind by John B's missing father - and Callum, ever attached at the hip with Sarah, is being dragged along on this adventure as well. Not that he's really complaining, because it also gives him an opportunity to get closer to JJ... and maybe, finally, he can make some memories with this sunshine boy that are filled more with warmth and love than useless pining.

Except then they all get shot at. More than once. And now Callum's definitely complaining... but with JJ starting to look at him in a way that gives him goosebumps, probably not as much as he should be in a treasure hunt with life-or-death stakes. Oh well. ❞
