“Come on! Just a bit further.”
“Kid, you’re starting to sound more and more crazy the further into the sands we go. If you’re leading me to some sort of ambush-”
“Am not!” the young boy quickly defended, pulling her hand, trying to keep the woman on track. It was strange: When they held hands, it felt like a magnetic pull, as if the Force needed this small event to happen. As if the name Jinn Ani didn’t sound familiar enough to Kelsey Jinn herself. Also, the boy looked just like a younger version of her brother by bond. The dots didn’t connect yet. It was…odd to say the least, but also familiar. All the former Jedi general, now turned droid mechanic knew was that the child seemed to be intrigued by her, overhearing her name by Mr. Lars, when the woman came to fix a pair of malfunctioning droids. Then the boy insisted she come with him. His father and mother talked sometimes about the sister who was also lost to Order 66, assuming she died from her legion of troops turning on her. Distant memories of the woman were told fondly, but always ended with a solemn wish that Kelsey Gallhea had lived. Most memories consisted of Kelsey fighting with valor and respect with her droid B-M0 at her side and her legion, the 730th.
“We’re almost there,” Jinn Ani panted as the two tried to beat the heat of the two suns as they trudged through the desert. “That cave over there?” he pointed to an unassuming natural structure, “That’s it. That’s my home.”
Kelsey wasn’t surprised. She had been to Tatooine many times, knowing its economy run by smugglers and slaves and yet there wasn’t any riches found for the majority of the population. Living conditions weren’t great, but the inhabitants made most of what they had. Unease began to settle into the mechanic’s stomach as a slight breeze blew her smock lightly. As they approached the entrance way, a little machine popped up, scanning them. It turned red.
“It’s okay, she’s with me,” the child said calmly before it turned blue again. Briefly, he took a look back at the dirty blonde haired woman, hoping for her to continue forward, and she did.
The woman took a slower pace walking into the cave than Jinn Ani, who was eager to introduce his new friend to his family, and let go of her hand. As she took each step, the pull that she felt before with the boy became more amplified. This detour was getting weirder by the minute, and yet she kept her trust in this child.
“Mom? Dad? Gabe? Hannah? I brought a friend! Get this: she has the same name but as her last name!”
A few moments later, the mother came out of a deeper section of the cave. Once Kelsey caught sight of them, the Force connection was electric. Immediately they knew each other. Immediately, they both spoke each other’s names in sync, their voices desperate to think that who they were seeing was really in front of them after ten years.
“Andrial?”
“Kelsey? Do my eyes deceive me?”
“Is that you?” the mechanic approached a few feet closer, carefully, “Is it…really you?”
Andrial stood before her, wearing a worn tunic. Most of their outfit however was made of materials and elements of their outfit they usually wore ten years prior. The double sun exposure made the fabrics dull, however. They might have looked a bit different, but it was still Andrial, in the flesh, still alive and well.
“I should ask the same of you, to prove you aren’t a ghost,” their voice filled with tears at the back of the throat, one of their hands covering their mouth from the shock. Kelsey didn’t have time to react before Andrial abruptly cried out, “Ben?! Ben, come quick!”
Ben? Kelsey thought, Who’s Ben?
As the three could hear footsteps running and echoing towards them, Jinn Ani looked back at the stranger. He tilted his head in confusion before his eyes widened, connecting who this woman was in his own mind. It couldn’t be from the knowledge and stories he received from his parents, but…here she was, standing in front of him, not a story or legend anymore.
“You’re Kelsey Gallhea, aren’t you?” he half whispered in awe. Before she could answer though, the running became louder, then was paired with two smaller pairs of footsteps running alongside them. Andrial, Jinn Ani, and Kelsey turned to see a man with two children, a boy and girl, one on each side of him. The girl had dark brown hair in a braid with hand made spectacles, most likely made out of old republic parts, while the boy looked almost exactly like Jinn Ani but the hair was more blonde. The man in the woven poncho couldn't be mistaken for anyone else; even after all these years after the Clone Wars, General Gallhea knew exactly who Ben really was. The hair and beard would have given him away, but most importantly was those unforgettable eyes that seared themselves into her memory. Memories were all that she had of him. He looked exactly what she remembered he looked like.
“Andrial, what’s wrong?”
That voice. It was the same. She longed to hear that voice again after thinking she wouldn’t hear it again.
Ben Kenobi stopped in his tracks, the children in tow followed suit. He looked to his partner who was crying before his eyes turned to settle on the newcomer, the stranger that stared right back at him. Kelsey didn’t move. All she could do was look across the cave. It was silent besides Andrial’s quiet weeping until Jinn Ani spoke up, “Dad, it’s Aunt Kelsey! You told me about her!”
As soon as the child said that, Kelsey parted her lips, her dull blue eyes softening. It was true. It all made sense now.
“Obi-Wan,” her voice faltered and confirmed aloud.
Ben Kenobi was put aside for a moment and let Obi-Wan speak for himself.
“Kelsey?”
She nodded before a swell of emotion made her run to her brother of so many years, almost leaping as she put her arms around him. Obi-Wan stood there, frozen, arms out, unsure of what to do. He was in utter shock, standing like a statue. As Kelsey started to cry in her brother’s arms, the notion that Kelsey was alive rang through his head. She was alive, crying into his chest. Slowly, he closed his arms around the small form of her, holding her to him; their height difference made it so the woman’s head rested under Kenobi’s chin.
“You’re alive. Thank the stars you are,” he squeezed her tighter.
As Obi-Wan held her sister, he remembered his entire life with Kelsey at his side, ever since they were younglings. He saw her become a padawan, coped together with the loss of their father figure and master, and became generals of the war together, fighting alongside one another for the good of the Republic against the Separatists that would soon become the Empire. Despite losing the war, despite having so few Jedi existing in the galaxy, those two survived. Kelsey had been by his side when he needed her most, and vice versa.
As they held one another, Obi-Wan put back on his persona of Ben when he noticed his children watching.
“Children,” he started, as he slowly unraveled the hug, “This is Kelsey, my sister. Kelsey, meet Hannah and Gabe. I’m assuming you have already met Jinn Ani.”
When Kelsey pulled back, she wiped her tears, a smile crossing her face, looking at the wonderful family unit her brother had made for himself with Andrial at his side. Hannah and Gabe looked up at her aunt in awe, like seeing one’s hero. The mechanic laughed softly at that, spotting it right away, “It’s very nice to meet you. I see you have all your parents’ sense of curiosity.”
“Where have you been hiding?” Andrial asked, crossing their arms casually, moving towards the group.
“I’ve been on Battu,” she answered, kneeling down to shake hands with the children before resting her arm across her knee, “When I took an escape ship after my legion went rogue, that was the first place I thought of. Qui-Gon and Dooku took us there when we were children. That was one of my first exposures to other planets and civilizations.”
“Battu is oozing with smugglers,” Obi-Wan raised an eyebrow.
“That may be true, but so does Tatooine. You need to look for something good in order to find it. An archivist of sorts named Kembe quickly found me in the marketplace and took me in. Knew right away I was a Jedi and needed to hide. So, he quickly found me a job repairing droids. He risked a lot for me, risking his life to hide a Jedi in plain sight, but he did it anyway.”
She went back up to a standing position, “I’ve been making a living repairing droids across the galaxy, and B-M0 comes for the ride.” She couldn’t help but smile wide at mentioning her robot buddy.
Ben smirked, “You still have that nervous wreck of a droid?”
“He’s been my constant companion, I could never get rid of him. Currently he’s on the ship recharging while I do my work. I’ve been out here for a little under a week doing repairs here.”
Jinn Ani grinned, “And that’s where I saw her, dad. She was repairing Mr Lars’ droids. Thought I heard my name, but it was actually hers!”
Andrial nodded, “You are both named after Qui-Gon.”
“I chose to keep Jinn,” Kelsey added, “Obviously the Empire would know General Gallhea if they heard it. Luckily during the war, I didn’t use Jinn, so…I’m glad to represent it.”
They all stood in a circle, listening to Kelsey talk about her life on Battu in exile. While Ben tried to keep himself hidden and outside the public eye as much as possible, his sister however blended right in with the melting pot of the good and the bad, still helping people. Then, Obi-Wan quieted when she mentioned that she wished her Master, Tinian Vorru, made it out alive when Order 66 presented itself, as well as Commander Zen and his men.
“We did what we could,” she continued on, “People think the war is over but….it isn’t over. I’d like to fight for it, but the time will come. It will come.”
As she mused this aloud, Kenobi’s children looked up at her. Hearing those words would’ve been from their father if he didn’t want to hide all of his life. She smiled strongly at Hannah, Gabe, and Jinn Ani, a new generation of hope.
“There will come a day that peace can be brought back to balance the darkness.”
Surprisingly, Ben said something that Kelsey thought Obi-Wan would never say.
“The war is over, Kelsey. We lost. The Jedi are just about extinct. Who will fight back?”
“Many people that believe and fight for what is right.”
“Who will be here to protect children from being slaughtered?”
“We will, Obi-Wan,” she answered, her voice becoming a stronger force.
“We are not trained-”
“Obi-Wan.” she silenced him, putting up a hand, “We might have not fought for ten years, haven’t held a lightsaber, haven’t used the Force, haven’t done anything, but training all of our lives has prepared us. You just don’t know it yet.”
The whole cave quieted. A soft sigh escaped Andrial, not wanting to break it to their sister in law that Obi-Wan was no more and that non-jedi Ben Kenobi had cemented his place.
“Kelsey…We have a family now, Andrial and I,” Ben answered for her, however, “And I can’t leave here.”
In response, his sister nodded, knowing the risks, but she couldn’t help but notice that Obi-Wan wasn’t the same. In that instant she confirmed that the Obi-Wan she knew wouldn’t be returning anytime soon.
“I understand. I will be here when you can leave.”
