David Finlay Masterlist Main Masterlist
The last time I had seen David was in January. It had been three months since I had last held him, the last time I had felt his lips on mine. We were used to spending long periods of time apart, but this time was different. I was the first to become All Elite. I was the guinea pig to get the lay of the land before the elite invasion of The War Dogs. Gabe and I had been regulars on AEW programming over the last year; it was about time Tony Khan offered me a contract.
I had been officially “All Elite” for a few weeks when Gabe began showing up before bringing Clark along with him. It felt weird having the three of us on Dynamite without David. It bothered me when the girls backstage talked about him, saying, "I don’t know if I could survive three months without my boyfriend”.
Walking into the arena, I felt off. I felt like people were looking at me weirdly. I went to call David, but the phone didn’t even get to ring before I heard a little robotic voice say “The person you are trying to reach is offline, please try again later”. After my text messages bounced back, I decided to check his location. The screen read 1-3-22 Noge, Setagaya-ku, Tokyo: Last updated 21 hours ago. “Have you heard from David recently, I haven’t heard from him since yesterday,” I asked Clark, hoping he would have some idea of where his best friend was. “He probably forgot his phone in the Dojo again and has no idea where it is because it’s most likely dead.”
I tried to think back to the last time David and I talked on the phone. My mind blanked. I knew my mind had been scattered recently; I swore we talked the other day.
Regardless, I tried not to think too deeply into this. David and I had reached that point in our relationship where it didn’t matter if we hadn’t seen each other in months or talked for a few days. The second we reunited, it was like we didn’t miss a beat.
Tonight, Gabe and Clark would be facing Orange Cassidy and Darby Allin in a tag match. It was nothing fancy, just a simple tag match, yet my senses seemed to be on fire. I felt anxious, my mouth dry. I wasn’t even the one wrestling; all I had to do was accompany the boys to the ring and join Tony Schiavone and Excalibur on commentary. I did commentary all the time in Japan, so why did everything seem so different?
Dynamite didn’t go on air for another few hours, so I decided to take a smoke break. I never smoke cigarettes anymore. I stopped when David and I started getting serious.
However, the occasional cigarette isn’t the end of the world.
When I returned to the arena, I found Gabe and Clark. “Were you smoking?” Gabe asked me, “What? It’s not like David’s here to lecture me about it.” My tone was harsher than I intended.
Just then, I felt someone wrap their hands around my waist from behind. I didn’t need to turn around to know who that was. “Hi Angel,” God, I missed his voice.
I turned to meet him. “What are you doing here?!” I buried my face into his chest. I couldn't believe he was standing right in front of me. “I’m all Elite,” he whispered loud enough that only I could hear it. “What?! Why didn’t you tell me?” I exclaimed. “I wanted it to be a surprise, I wanted to surprise you, baby.” I could feel his grasp around me tighten. My body melted into his, and for the first time in weeks, I felt relieved. I felt as if there had been all this weight on my chest that was suddenly released.
“Okay, love birds,” Gabe said, interrupting us, “As much as I love to see my parents back together, we need to get you hidden, Finlay. That clementine and skeleton boy can’t know you’re here,” I looked at David with a confused look. “You know I love to make a grand entrance,” David said softly.
