UM Review: The Silent Scene - ‘Cities’

The Silent Scene –Cities Label: N/A Release Date: August 12th, 2014 Reviewed By: Gabriela Jeronimo The Silent Scene is vocalist/guitarist Richie Arthur, vocalist/guitarist Duran Visek, drummer Jeff Maurer and keyboardist/programmer Ben Spremulli. From New York, NY they are a four piece electro-house, indie-dance, alternative-pop based band. The Silent Scene is here to put a twist to generic rock bands today by adding elements of EDM (electronic dance music) to their alternative-pop sound. After changing the release date of their EP, “Cities,” it is now being released on August 12.

The first song on the EP is “Collecting Hearts.” It starts off with guitar riffs and smoothly transitions to catchy electronic beats. Richie’s and Duran’s vocals make you want to sing along right away. It’s a great song to start off the EP as it gives you an insight as to who The Silent Scene is and what their sound is. This has become one of my favorites on the EP and I always catch myself humming it.

“Electrify Me” is the type of song that would be played on the radio and I don’t mean that in a bad way. There’s a lot of music I’ve discovered by listening to the radio at work and this song is so catchy that I would thoroughly enjoy listening to it all day. This song has more EDM elements which makes it stand out from the rest of the EP. It reminds me of Calvin Harris’ “Summer” and I really love that song.

Things slow down with “Skyscraper.” It’s still catchy and has electronic elements, but the vocals are so smooth and serene that it makes you want to blast the song on a car ride at night. Halfway through the song there’s a lot of keyboards, synth and electronic beats that pick up the speed of the song.

To end the EP, “Speechless” does a good job of combining all of the elements from the rest of the songs into one song. It’s very loud and very The Silent Scene. It has loud, big drumming, combined with strong vocals, rock n’ roll guitars and catchy and groovy electronic beats. It’s the song that would be played as an encore and will leave you wanting more. The word I would use to describe this song is huge.

The Silent Scene can be described as The 1975 meets EDM. There are so many elements that the boys work with that it makes each song on “Cities” unique. I’m glad I got to discover The Silent Scene because they have become one of my favorite up and coming bands. They are on to big things and I can definitely see them being the next big thing so keep up to date with them!
