I’m cheating, somewhat, but today is a work day for me. This is probably one of my favorite poems I’ve ever written, and this is a video of me butchering it that I made like five years ago. Enjoy.
So it’s world poetry day. Have a me recording a poem. It’s a good one, and it’s also short - I’m sure nobody wants more than a minute of my voice!

I like poems. Poems are good. Have this
A curse runs in my family. It corrupts the hearts of men, Rending their flesh and breaking bone. It turns them into monsters. It makes them hunger for destruction. Violence becomes second nature. It binds the women into loveless marriages, Telling them they must stay, it is their duty, It whispers, “what would you do without him.” It tells them he’ll change, that for them, He’ll be different And convinces them they aren’t worth more.
Violence runs in my family. It is written into our DNA, Passed down like a hidden sickness Waiting, dormant, deadly. It coils in the men, poisoning, corrupting, Turning them into their fathers And their father’s fathers. In the women it shows like a sickly bruise. Rising when we dare to love, poisoning our hearts Making us sharp and hard, Killing softness where it dares to sprout.
Survival runs in my family. Like weeds we sprout back after we are cut down. We thrive in barren wastes, Spreading against all that says we should wither. We survive because we must. From birth we are made hard and sharp Beating against the history passed down, The poison in our blood. We are survivors, not by choice, but because We would choke on our legacy If we were anything less.
