Fic Rec Bingo

A few weeks ago some one posted a fic rec bingo card, and I thought to myself ‘I should do that’.  And then I didn’t.

Lets see how many I can get through.  Because my degree in math says numbers are subjective, the recs for each box may only approximate one.

I wasn’t certain about this when I started reading the first time.  I love the fantasy aspects of Guardian, and this is a No Powers AU.   But the character development and situations are so perfectly in voice that nothing is lacking.  And every time my brain goes back to this scene:

“What did the Professor do to you?” Lin Jing asks, sounding a little vexed.

Shen Wei kissed me in public outside the Chemistry Wing, Zhao Yunlan thinks, but fortunately for his coworkers’ sanity he manages to keep the details of this in his head, contenting himself with a dreamy smile. They know him well enough that they can probably-

Wait.

Hold up.

Shen Wei kissed him in public outside the Chemistry Wing.

Shen Wei. Kissed him. In public.

 Outside the Chemistry Wing?!?

“MOTHERFUCKER!” Zhao Yunlan howls, standing up so fast that both his chair and his lunch go flying.

I have to read the whole thing again.

Sometimes I find it helpful to just do a word-vomit paragraph - I write out not only what I need to have happen next, but what I'm still not sure about. I ask myself questions. It's very free-flowing stream-of-consciousness, and sometimes it really helps me work stuff out or take the pressure off.

This is such a good idea! This and the other advice I got on this post was so helpful - I’ve already shaken out more than double yesterday’s wordcount today. <3

Oh my God I was there for the first wildebeest sighting. I feel like I need a tshirt or something.

It doesn’t even exist anymore -- that was one of the posts lost in the hack. Treasure the memory :D

... I have been reading your LJ/tumblr for 14 years. O.O

Scary thought, isn’t it? I’ve been in fandom more than half my life, and I’ve been Copperbadge for almost a third of it.

I tried making caramel recently and made toffee instead, but I should try this instead.

I’m not sure I’d entirely recommend it. The caramel cooled to a solid block, and I don’t really know what to do with it at this point. I think the issue is that I was making it with whey from skim milk, so there was no fat to keep it soft. Next time I try it, I’m going to add some cream near the end of the process. 

If you are interested in “shit you can make with whey” however, if you boil the whey down until it’s just barely starting to turn yellow, you can spread it very thinly on parchment paper. It will dry out into flakes that can be whizzed up in a blender to make a very nice whey protein powder, suitable for adding to food to up its protein content a little. I add it to bread dough when I make bread.

Undead tumblr life

My very first tumblr was created in.... 2012? 2011? Post-Livejournal strikethrough, sometime. And while I've created a sideblog here and there, I haven't Signed Up For Tumblr in quite some time.

Now that my beloved, long-running tumblr has been nuked (causes still under investigation, @staff pls talk to me), I am getting the experience of signing up for tumblr for the first time, all over again!!

In no particular order, I have learned:

It is very difficult to remember the screennames of everyone I used to follow

Even when I do remember them, the search function does not always work. Did that tumblr's user click a button to make it less searchable? Is it just what the search function does? No idea.

In an attempt to show everyone I am really for real actually the same person I was, I reused my old icon and chose a new tumblr name that was as similar as possible to my old one. Because of this, I'm fairly sure none of my old friends who I have now re-followed... have realized that I was re-following them because this is, in fact, a completely new blog. I am very glad to be able to read their posts again!! But also none of my former mutuals have followed me back yet, and thus none of them knows what has happened. I have just apparently stopped posting.

I am also not allowed to message anyone directly. Waiting period so bots can't start messaging everyone at random? Maybe, and probably a good idea if it is! But also, I can't actually tell anyone what's going on for {'i don't know' noise} some period of time, as yet undetermined.

Since I am now suddenly a tumblr with no followers as opposed to one that, not to toot my own horn or anything, had more than no followers, I have not gotten a single bot trying to be my friend. A silver lining! But also even the robots have forsaken me, single tear

Losing access to all those saved posts, reblogs, social networks, and records of various types (I can no longer tell if I've liked a post before!) is extremely unsettling and I feel a little like I've lost a physical place I used to spend a lot of time in

I now get milestone awards again. Yay?

I stg it’s like someone took all my favorite character types and tropes (the emotional and physical hurt/comfort alone, ye gods....) and specifically fine-tuned this ship to make me heartclutch (but I forgive them for it, because SO GOOD FOR ME).

If he likes historical soldier stories, Monstrous Regiment might be good. I loaned my copy to a soldier friend and he loved it. Guards Guards is often a good starting point, too!
