The coolest and simultaneously least cool I will ever be in my life happened a few months ago when I was playing some kind of strange horse girl board game made for middle-aged women with my sister and her friends. A card came up asking if anyone could recite a poem from memory. My sister looked me dead in the eyes and said, ‘s0ym1lk can.’ 

And she was fucking right. 

The poem was Jabberwocky, by Lewis Carroll. I recited it start to finish, missing ne’er a word, and was met not with applause but immediate questions about why that is the poem I have memorized.

Is there any feeling better than calling your dog… realizing she can’t hear you because she’s too far away[*], then getting the whistle and blowing it…

Galumphing

I'll never forget first hearing the Rite of Spring – I still think it's the most remarkable piece of music ever written; it's more modern than anything. Nobody's caught up with Stravinsky yet – like late Beethoven. Beethoven's my kind of bloke, there's an uncertainty, the tripping over the furniture and the awkwardness, the 'galumphing' factor. It's like Joyce – he takes the detritus of life and turns it into diamonds. The slow movement of Op 132 is almost my favourite piece of music. You wonder, is there a Catherine Cookson sensibility about listening to it, making it into a kind of musical soap opera. But no – you don't let the biography get mixed up with it.

Toda su vida fue un continuo y vivaz «galumphing». Galumphing (palabra inventada por Lewis Carroll en «A través del espejo» y para lo cual, a falta de mejor traducción, podríamos aplicar la también inexistente palabra castellana «galofrar») es, según el parecer de algunos antropólogos, la única forma de explicar ciertos comportamientos de las formas de vida superiores. Galumphing es la actividad inútil, el juego sin sentido, la jovial tontería. Es el retozo de los cachorros, es dar saltitos en vez de caminar, es hafablafar efen cófodifigofo, es ponerle ápodos ridículos a las mascotas, es bailar sin música, es decir cosas sin sentido como Oop Bop Sh'Bam o Ool-Ya-Koo... La improvisación es un juego. El juego es libertad, es alegría, es la vuelta a la infancia, la despreocupación absoluta. El juego, pues, es la forma más pura del galumphing. Y Dizzy Gillespie vivía constantemente en el galumphing. Dizzy Gillespie estaba todo el tiempo galofrando.
