Alol’s Madness Alpha
Heartland Gaming Expo Alpha We Still Exist I Promise Extraordinaire
First order of business - Sorry! The last handful of months have been really crazy, so if we didn't respond to anyone or were generally boring and lacking in updates, that's why. Two of us graduated from university, two of us graduated from highschool, and an indeterminate number of us have moved to new houses/apartments/cities.
It's been weird.
But everything is settling down, and we wanted to share a little of what has been going on. We've got a lot to talk about because we haven't posted for ages, so we'll split it up into multiple posts. This one's all about the future of the alpha. Later we'll have an Expo recap and a handful of video or image posts.
Some time last century we posted about how we'd be going to the Heartland Gaming Expo. Well we did, and we had a lot of fun and some good even came out of it. The run up to HGE was pretty rough. As with last year we met at about noon and worked until 10 AM the next day.
With occasional floor-naps.
But we made a small proof-of-concept town level connected to a small dungeon level with the early beginnings of a quest and dialogue system.
Note: the Tinker looks a bit like Tavish right now, this is not multiplayer.
And Tavish sort of shows the weapon he is holding while walking!
We're pretty pleased with what we have, but there's a bit of work to do before we're really happy enough with it to release as Alpha v2. There are a handful of little graphical quirks and silly inefficiencies we'd like to stomp out before releasing it into the wild.
We also added some new and more interesting weapons, including my favorite weapon ever.
I'm always afraid to make predictions about when we'll finish things, but the build we have now we're pretty pleased with. After a little code cleanup and a round or two of internal testing, we want to get this out the door. There's not really a lot to do because I didn't make a lot of stupid 4 AM decisions like last year. So we're expecting the more major bugs to be squished sometime around the end of summer, when we will almost definitely release a build for Mac, Linux, and PC.
More to come on HGE!
So I have 3 Heroes (gonna work on a 4th today) with everything functioning so far, Is anyone interested in joining a quick Alpha test? I will decide times and such if you would message me really quick c:
Keep in mind, you have to have Warcraft III and it's Expansion to play. I know it's rough and a lot of people don't have it anymore, but If you still remember you CD key from your old game, head on over to battle.net and download away!
If you don't have Warcraft III and would love to play, I am so sorry :C.
Finally, after several months of waiting in development hell as the devs get their lives in some sort of order, an update has been released! Kagome v0.1.1 is now officially released! A changelog has been included in order to explain all the changes from the previous version. Compared to the previous release, there is no substantial new content. v0.2.0 is still being developed, however we took some time to clean up the code from the original release. Some changes include a new intro sequence after the demo tour, ability to name the character yourself, and a method of bypassing the massive maze that is B3F. The new release has been thoroughly playtested and install tested to ensure no inconsistent bugs exist between the two. As usual, though, something may have been missed, so feel free to contact us if you discover any bugs! You can download the new version here: http://www.mediafire.com/download/7q9nyvcidslz4ed/Kagome%20v0.1.exe
FlubberKnuckle Games and the Future
FlubberKnuckle Games is a game development group that was unofficially started sometime back in 2007/2008. An official name was given to the studio in 2008 and it was called Digital Dragon Studios. FlubberKnuckle's founders include three men other than myself and they are Mark Hawkins, Ryan Baylis, and Alex Hughes. Our first project was to create a fighting game named Pangaea and we spent months designing characters, movesets, the world, and fleshing out the story for the first game and the two subsequent sequels; then we realized that we didn't even know how to make videogames which brings us to now.
FlubberKnuckle has gone through many changes since then but now I feel like we have a really good base and are truly ready to get our feet into the industry. Our new group is bolstered with the talents of Lloyd Yancy, Greg Shavers, Leland Stein, Jaloni Brooks, and William Brown. Other members are also on the way and we're always scouting for talent. Our first release will be the card game Flipz which started of as a tabletop game but will actually be our first digital release (in place of Game Alpha which is going to take more skill.) More on that later though :).
FlubberKnuckle has big plans coming up. We can't wait to do our more ambitious projects. We have many lined up including Game Alpha which is a not so standard turn-based RPG, Bitshot/Skyfire the ever changing scrolling shooter, Bastards the creature collection game which aims to put Pokemon to shame, and ADP the Workmen's Army which is a strategy game that takes a closer look at a moment in history. Those are our list of projects to work on in the near future but we have a much longer list than that that we'd need to upgrade our skillset for. Join us on our journey from would-be's to l33ts. Hopefully the journey won't take too long but I can promise you this...we will get there. Thanks for the read and stay tuned.
New, FTP Minecraft-type-thing. It's an interesting idea, I hope they can polish it up.
I downloaded the game and gave it a shot; it is very clearly an alpha, pretty tough to play right now. But considering what they've got so far, I'm still impressed. As they say, the video is of a far more complete EXE, but it's still neat.
It's definitely worth the download, even if you only give it a small shot. Be wary of bugs, though; I shut mine down when the camera blacked out. Or maybe I got stuck in a rock. Who knows.
One thing to point out from the creators; when the game starts, the screen will be blank, and it will stay like that for some time. This is normal. Don't freak out. Anyway, they have lots of information on the playable Alpha in the comments of the video, so give it a look.
Happy building. :D
