Boycott Nintendo!
These insane prices for games for the upcoming Switch 2 are completely unreasonable, and outright insulting.
I say we stop buying things from Nintendo until they lower the price of their games to, at the very least, $60.
The consumer deserves better than this, and Nintendo needs to be reminded that they would not be where they are now without their fans.
"indie games are so much cheaper than AAA games"
They shouldn't be. Indie games should be a bastion of hope *because* they're so cheap. If they were just a bit more expensive we might actually have more indie game studios because we'd be paying the artists, developers, musicians, etc everything that they're worth.
Indie games should be a bastion because they're so creative and free of AAA slop and free to explore wild new ideas. If we underpay indie artists we won't be able to get more indie art, because they won't be able to sustain their practice of doing art.
But there's still a line. For me, that line is about $69.99. I will not pay more than that for a game unless I REALLY want to support the devs (Like Warframe, I love you DE).
Long story short, fuck Nintendo, buy indie games, and support indie game devs and artists with extra purchases and such
Okay but replayability is completely subjective?
I might get hours out of Mario Kart, but most people will only play it when they have friends and/or family over as a party game, and that’s it.
Metroid is made to be replayed again and again to beat it faster, but I only play it once and I’ll replay it a year or so later.
This is just such a non, business bs speak, answer. Yeah games are getting more expensive to make, but you can’t expect your customers to pay almost $100 for the base game. That’s mostly likely someone’s whole entertainment budget for the month, if not more.
OG post:
I will say wrt the Switch 2 price boondoggle...
...Well, firstly it's super shitty, and I feel like the only way it could be made acceptable is if A) Those are only launch prices of games and they bring them down over their life like Nintendo's never done ever or B) They are also going to do much lower prices for lower-end mainline series entries.
Secondly, I wonder if like, their idea was that they'd try and count on the backwards compatibility + the upgrades for existing Switch titles to soften the blow of that price hike. Probably not gonna work, but I'd bet that was the logic.
And thirdly, as my friend @thehungryreader told me "If the Democrats were smart (they’re not), they’d spend the next 4 years yelling TRUMP MADE YOUR GAMES EIGHTY DOLLARS (they won’t)"
On this I agree. But I will also say, the further-left Millennial and Gen-Z candidates trying to primary them totally could and should...
[And before you bring it up, yes I am aware of the issue of the horrors of the supply chain there, but that's a much larger knot to untangle.
Tho I will say when you dig down the true concern is it being affordable and accessible rather than being cheap and super-convenient, and I think that's where you start in thinking of how to fix things, because there is a difference]
Hot take but we should never have standardized game prices. There is no way that Mario Party is worth the same as Breath of the Wild or the Last of Us or whatever.
It means that smaller game experiences never get made by major studios because they don't want to sell a $30 game, so ideas that would have been best small.
It means that really big, ambitious experiences really can't get made, because there's too much of a backlash to games costing more than $70. So games that would have been best as really big experiences are left unfinished or are crammed with microtransactions to pay for the game's big budget.
Indie games get it right: they can make a quick $5 game or a full-fledged $40 game, and people will buy based on whether the price makes sense for the game.
It’s only in times like i’m going through right now, running dangerously low on money, I really sit down and think about the pricing of video games. It’s been like 15 years of video games costing the better half of $100 and it only goes up after that initial purchase these days. I sometimes scoff at people buying $400 action figures but like, hey, I’m spending a lot of cash on my hobby too. Weird to think about if you just sit and focus on it.
ANTHEM IS CHEAP AS FUCK
*Please keep in mind that this is in AUSTRALIAN dollars* *All the americans seem to forget that us aussies get to pay even fucking more for everything game related* Remember those that cried over anthem's price? Fun fact - Anthem = $100 World of Warcraft = $154.95 for 2 expansions + a $15/month subscription, which then ads to $180/year. Ontop of pets being $13.50 each and mounts $34 each. Then comes wow's game service prices such as name change is $20, race change is$34 and faction change $40 SO. What if, one were to buy the exp + 1 year of subs, brought 1 pet, 1 mount, then decided down the line they wanted to change faction and race? $456.40 I don’t know why people feel the need to shit on Anthem’s price when bullshit like this is a thing. But oh wait. No one cries about WoW’s prices on YouTube don’t they? Let alone in general i guess. Paying 60 - 100$ for a game has been the average price range for games for years on end. ALSO Guild Wars 2 - to buy both expansions is $80USD or $112 in Australian dollars Overwatch - when it first launched it was $100 Diablo 3 - (in Australian dollars) > $30 standard | Battle chest - $50 | Reaper souls deluxe edition - $55 | Necromancer class -$ 21.95 (this class has been out for ages and still has a price tag) Starcraft 2 - campaign collection is $60 | deluxe edition is $90 COD 4 - standard edition is $90 | digital deluxe is $140 | digital deluxe enhanced is $180 | black ops pass is $65 Destiny 2 - Forsaken is $35 | legendary collection is $44.97 Side note....been tempting to make this into a video, along with an Anthem review, How many of you would like to see that?
