"Moments like the 4 Nations Face-Off are when the glass cracks, the nets fall, and the pucks come hurtling at us at breakneck speed. There is no escaping the cries of nationalism, xenophobia, and fascism as they ring out from the stands."

The Golden Knights win against the Flames and I didn’t watch this one so it will be a condensed recap post. I did get scoring notifications from the NHL app so I did read that Marner got a hat trick (his first hat trick with the Golden Knights, I think it’s kind of ironic he scored the hat trick the night that the Leafs got eliminated from the playoffs).
The first Knights goal was scored by Marner and it was assisted by Theodore and McNabb.
The second Knights goal was scored by Marner and it was assisted by Andersson and Eichel.
The third Knights goal was a powerplay goal scored by Dorofeyev and it was assisted by Marner.
The fourth Knights goal was scored by Howden and it was assisted by Theodore and Barbashev.
The fifth Knights goal was scored by Barbashev and it was assisted by Marner.
The sixth Knights goal was scored by Marner and it was assisted by Stone and Barbashev.
I guess I’ll put my thoughts together for yall, sans whiteboard tonight
fuckin baseball looking score tonight, Jesus. This preseason has been the battle of the backups and oh man, they’re both laying down to die. I think over the preseason as a whole Prosvetov has looked better, but tonight neither of them looked nhl calibre. This is what we were trying to avoid by going out to get another goalie in the offseason, and it doesn’t seem to be going well.
another battle is the spot for the fourth line centre. Before tonight, that seemed like the only forward position (even skater position) up for debate, but now we have both Pospisil and huberdeau possibly out. Between Matvei and Rory, I’d rather take Rory. Centre depth is very important for this team, and Rory is skilled when he’s on a line with good chemistry and feeling comfortable. Tonight was not that night (-3 in 10mins played), but to be fair it wasn’t that night for anyone except the top line. Matvei is good, but he’s young and doesn’t need waivers to go down. He can make a couple jumps this year until we know if it’s worth it to burn the year off his elc
speaking of the top line, I like the sound of it. Obv I was just listening but mick spoke a lot abt bee and naz finding each other. And that was the only connection to finish tonight, which bodes well for them at least.
let’s also talk about Connor Zary. He’s pulled off the first pp, put on the fourth line with Kerins and pospy, and I didn’t hear his name a lot tonight. With the way some of our young forwards have been playing, I wouldn’t be surprised to hear his name in the rumour mill. He’s a valuable player, but the org has lost confidence in him and he’s not playing up to expectations. We could get assets for him that allow us to bring in those young guys like Matvei and Rory, and avoid any future losses as well. Idk.
it was just an ugly game all around. weegs was maybe our best player all night, playing 24 minutes and somehow staying at a 0 rating. I wouldn’t hold much of this game against individual players (other than maybe the goalies, who knew they had to show up tonight and didn’t). It’s more a team issue. A lack of cohesion, a lack of communication, and some coaching that probably could’ve been better. The PK is new and it looks that way. It needs more work, not just from the players, but from the staff.
some good things: our face off guys won face offs. top six looked sharp at times. Mackenzie Weegar will clean up mistakes.
- So, the mission this time is to find the key to the cell that Mayu is locked in, and it conveniently lies inside the basement of the Osaka house (the first house we went to in chapter 1).
- Before leaving, however, it was time for another sidequest. This chapter ended up being a little longer because there were a few sidequests that were initiated. The first one involved following the big bad, Sae, around the house and collecting her journals. I am really liking this addition to the game. There was a little bit of it in the original with Miyako and Masumi (the ghost couple from the first chapter) but they've added a lot more.
- Once again, I got jumpscared by the Kusabi; Whilst leaving the Kurosawa Manor, he popped up in the underground cellar and ended up chasing me all the way out the door, through the manor grounds and across the river! I ended up getting a game over because I hid in the wrong bushes.
- One of the other changes that has been made is that the village gets a lot darker. The sky above is almost pitch black, and even with the flashlight it's nigh impossible to see further than a few feet ahead. All of which means only one thing....
- THE BLOODY KUSABI IS STILL HERE!!!! I have to admit, at this point I'm getting a little worried that they're going to overuse the Kusabi and it will take away the fear factor. Fortunately, it's not quite yet. The fact that they gave him this swirling mass of black fog around him helps, as it heralds his arrival without actually needing to show him.
- This is also the point where I started missing some of the more obvious ghost photos. So, in the game, there are the angry ghosts that roam around and attack you, and there are ghosts that just stand there for a bit and then disappear. Usually, I'm pretty good at catching them, but I have missed a fair few now, which is anoying.
- The puzzle to get into the basement of the Osaka house is a pretty simple colour matching puzzle, that's basically the same as the original game, which is why seeing the number of people struggling with it in the games' discussion page surprised me.
- The underground area beneath the Osaka house has been expanded, and is suitably creepy.
- I will say, the mourners (the guys with the blindfolds) were... kind of disappointing, and showed the gaps in the new battle system. It might just be due to the limitations of the time, but in the original they seemed so much creepier, bent double, all flailing arms one minute and dangerous stillness the next. Here, the stillness has been swapped out for constant aggression, which makes the fight feel very flat and uninteresting, and the look just... isn't as disturbing? It doesn't help that compared to the other characters, their look hasn't had quite the same level of re-design, so they look a bit basic.
- I also attempted to take another look around the small shrine that was added, but was ambushed by three ghosts and decided to take the hint and leave XD
- Ringu!?
- Naturally, when we get the key and get back to Mayu, she has disappeared. After heading back out of the Kurosawa Manor and into the main village, Mio spots her walking across a high bridge, and we get our first glimpse of the notorious Broken Neck ghost. Although the chapter ends a little earlier than the original, our next objective is to break into the Kiryu house and rescue Mayu!
I slept through the Italy game but did watch the Germany game, and they look scarily good at times, but they do get caught out on the counter at times but a overall a very good start from them
When I saw them at the euros they was their downfall then too! Nice to see nothings changed
there’s something so important, about that win yesterday. not only did we beat a team that has stanley cup aspirations, which has two of the best players in the world on their team (which we shut down), overall it was a stunning performance from every single player on the ice. from jt miller’s five points, to boeser’s four goals, to demko’s .955 save percentage with the flu to the introduction of hughes as the captain in a stunning fashion, across the board it was a great night not only for the team, but for the fans
(full tactico thoughts below the cut)
what we saw last night was a full team effort, not just the top 6 forwards and top 2 defensive pairings clicking. everyone across the line up was pulling their weight and clicking into place last night. because of injuries, illness, and our salary cap situation, we ended up playing with a player less, and with 11 forwards and 6 defensemen. this meant that the bottom 3 wingers especially needed to play more then they usually would, against the tough opponent of the most complete oilers team they have ever iced since they drafted mcdavid. and the bottom five did exceptionally well in the positions they put themselves in!!
lafferty, for being a new acquisition, knew exactly what he was doing. he positioned himself well, especially during the pk, right near the goal and was always in a good place to either pass or get the puck within shooting range of the net. he is such a smart player, drawing that penalty in the third is absolute genius and he just knows where to move within his line and how to create a good pass. i think hoglander worked well with him, as he made some nice little plays especially behind the edmonton net during one of the power plays (i think in the third period?) to keep possession of the puck. i was glad to see him make the roster, i think he’s a smart player and a solid person to have on the 4th line.
i adored joshua’s game, honestly he was one of the standouts of the night for me. he was willing to use his body, not only to block shots on the pk but also to drop the gloves less than 5 minutes into the game, but he was also able to position himself well to be in scoring positions and it paid off as he scored the 8th and final goal for the canucks. joshua is one of my favourite players, and i hope he continues doing well this season both with his physicality and his scoring, he is nothing but an asset and really is a necessary staple of our third line at this point.
the hirose/juulsen pairing did well when they were on the ice, nothing notable, however the cole/meyers pairing was incredible. very physical, both in hits and blocking shots, able to get back quickly and had some nice puck distributions, and other then meyer’s stupid penalty in the first period, they were great. ian cole is an amazing addition to the team and i can’t wait to see what more he will do, especially on the pk, he was excellent and i can’t wait to see more.
the “pbj” line of di guiseppe, boeser, and miller was incredible and so productive. near the net all night, lighting the lamp, excellent puck possession and was able to fight the hard battles in the corners. of course boeser’s 4 goals deserve to be celebrated, they were incredible (especially the first goal? sexy, sexy hockey), but di guiseppe and miller’s passes made it possible for boeser to finish the passes with incredible accuracy. these guys also did great work on the pp, they made up an excellent second unit to keep the pressure in the edmonton zone without the stars on the ice, and i think boeser got his groove back. lets see 30+ goals this season.
tocchet really loaded up the top line and the top d pairing, with hughes/hronek and garland/pettersson/kuzmenko as the top lines. i thought both lines did an excellent job not only creating chances, but also shutting down the mcdrai line when they were both out at the same time. petey had some stunning, sexy passes (i’m still thinking about his first pass to garland for the first goal,,,, holy shit that was sexy) and garland was able to hold his weight and finish the chances he was given practically on a platter. kuzya had a quiet night, but he made some productive moves to keep possession and he was able to keep the puck in the offensive zone during pp time so i’m not mad at how he played, i know he will only improve from here. hughes/hronek were exceptionally productive, both in passing and in blocking shots, and they had mcdavid shut down all night. the oilers not registering a single high danger scoring chance AT ALL at 5v5 with petey on the ice?? yeah that’s my selke candidate right there
and demko, how can i forget about thatcher demko? he made save after save, and the dmen gave him space to do so every time. he had a clear line of vision, and he used it. he made some incredible saves and came away with a save percentage that reflected that, all while having the flu! shoutout to desmith, though he only was in for 10 minutes he made some strong saves and didn’t look as nervous between the pipes as he did during the preseason. i’m glad he settled in nicely.
overall, we worked very well as a team. special teams were cooking, goalies were cooking, everything looked cohesive. there were some big hits, from joshua, meyers, and petey notably, and some good blocks. other then the first 5 minutes of the first period, and some sloppy passing in the middle, it was a strong, dominant game. we choked the life out of the oilers, even getting noted most boring man in the nhl to make salty comments about our decisions. i'm most proud of how we handled ourselves in the third, as edmonton were losing their heads with sloppy hits and stupid penalties, we kept ourselves together.
we fucking won. it was a great game. i'm so excited for this season. see you on saturday in edmonton.
