I hadn’t even got the side quest to talk to Aventus Arentino in Windhelm, spotted him in Riften. Clearly Grelod the Kind can’t be that bad if Aventus is willing to be in the city with her.

So one day I’m playing and decide to head over to Windhelm to do the Butcher quest. When I get there I can’t get the quest to trigger. I talked to everyone and spent 2 hours looking up how to get it to work. Eventually I use the console command to take me to the quest objective and I find myself in this weird, white landscape staring at a guard who’s walking around like everything is normal. Apparently at some point he glitched through the ground and ended up under the city. Talked to him and the quest continued like normal…
