It’s been pouring this morning and I’ve noticed that some of the tomatoes are leaning and needed support. As I mentioned in my last tomato post, I planed to use an old t-shirt to tie them. I like using them coz they’re chunky and soft, they won’t cut into the stem. Their stretchy nature will let the plant grow freely. Also, they’re free and can be used more than once. 11-Jul-2023
Finally built our herb spiral, which was a lot of lugging of big rocks but definitely worth it, so happy with how it turned out, I still need to get a few more herbs to plant up, and I'm going to eventually have them all in the coco liners (except mint, as it goes crazy) because they rot down but I'm leaving things in pots now so I can move them around to see where they thrive
This is so cute ☺️ I love vintage garden things! I’m always a fan of a recycling things too
Yesterday I started making a dead hedge. What is a dead hedge??? It is an incredibly easy, low maintenance, and completely free way of building a boundary which is permeable to smaller wildlife such as hedgehogs. It provides habitat and is a carbon sink.
Mine looks like total chaos and is still very green, so here is a picture of a neater one.
Okay so how do you make one? Mine is woven and piled against the base of some conifers that long ago were the border hedge but have grown up and left a gap large enough for chicken or man to step through or my neighbour's robot mower to escape through.
The basic principle is: make two rows of posts (don't have to be thick, 3cm diameter will do if your ground is soft), and then lay woody garden trimmings in the line between the two posts. That's it!
I used cut brambles, dog rose, these strange woody shrubs I'm removing, conifer trimmings, and various other bits. Because you're not weaving, like with hazel hurdles, the length is less important.
