John Singer Sargent (US 1856-1925) Mme Gautreau drinking a toast (1883) Oil on panel (32 x 41 cm)
What's more important in this picture of the Dutch Room is what's not in the picture, the empty frames once housed- #Rembrandt, Christ in the Storm on the Sea of Galilee- in the frame on the right . And . Rembrandt, A Lady and Gentlemen In Black- in the frame in the left . These two works were stolen with several other works, including Isabella Stewart Gardner's first major acquisition (#Vemeer, The Concert- one of only 36 paintings of the artist known to exist), on the night of March 18th, 1990 by a pair of thieves dressed as Boston Police officers. . . The crime has never been solved and the museum still offers a 5 Million Dollar reward for information leading to the recovery of all 13 works. . . . #igersboston #gardnermuseum #truecrime #unsolvedmysteries #art #travelingram #travelblogger #traveler #traveldiary #bostonma (at Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum)
