#spainsquare is located between the #garedebruxellescentral and the #grandplace and it is a not very inviting spot in #bruxelles. Nevertheless, the name of the square refers to a major period in the history of #flanders and #brussels, the two centuries during which the Spanish Habsburgs and the Southern Netherlands had close ties. #belgique owes thanks to Spain for Catholicism, potatoes and cocoa. And #belgium is famous for its fries and chocolate. The square holds a statue of two famous figures from Spanish literature: #donquixote and Sancho Panza. Brussels gave #spain the sculpture as a gift after the Spanish Presidency of the European Community in 1989.
