I have like a million quotes ready to cause donquibros related pain so here's this for now
One Piece 1160 rant-like thoughts about Garp, yes AGAIN!
The angsty funny post I made on Bluesky and here after reading the chapter:
Luffy sees a Celestial Dragon for the first time, buying a mermaid and other kidnapped humans: PUNCH Dragon sees how WG and Marines protect Celestial Dragon while they are killing slaves for fun: PUKEEEEE Garp sees all the crimes Celestial Dragons are doing: I HAVE TO CATCH ROGER
Which led to some healthy back and forth with a moot, so I thought I should keep all this documented here. Because it's good, to keep it all in one place.
Moot pointed out a few things and suggested:
Garp chose one out of the two evils, as Pirates are not good people, and as a Marine, despite the system being corrupt, he can keep them in check.
Hence, Garp didn't take the promotion to keep himself freer and away from WG's grip to operate on his idea of justice.
Garp's role as the Hero of Marines is that of a moral compass, which keeps Marines from becoming worse.
And we have not seen Garp's backstory or his first reaction to the Celestial Dragons' atrocities like Dragon and Luffy.
All these are fair points, but they are still redundant in the grand scheme of the OP universe's current political timeline when we have seen so much already.
Pirates are criminals; that's the whole point.
Pirates operate outside society's rules and regulations. They do whatever they want because they don't respect others' lives and property. Why are we expecting the Pirates not to be evil and bad people?
Just because Luffy is a good boy and does good for the masses because he is kind, doesn't mean others are. There are 1000 other pirate crews who are doing bad at the same time.
Whereas the World Government is there to govern the diverse societies and population of Blue Star, where there is a serious geographical and racial divide. And the role of Marines is to protect the civilians from pirates and other criminals that exploit this divide.
Like any other government and police, they are meant to serve the people. And to govern and protect the civilians, they need the civilians' taxes and support. But in the OP universe, both institutes are committing crimes against civilians on top of taking people's taxes and turning a blind eye to the criminal activities of the Celestial Dragons, who are enslaving people because they think they are the only chosen ones and the rest are beneath them.
There is no lesser of the two evils for anyone to pick.
There is only one big evil that permits other evils to grow and go unchecked.
Is there really no lesser of the two evils?
NAH!
The WG and Marines are the EVIL enablers and maintenance staff of this evil growth. The pirates are just the most visible byproduct of these 800 years of a corrupt system that only favours the Celestial Dragons' comfort and happiness.
Garp is not doing any favour to anyone by not taking the promotion; it is for his own ego to feel he did something right. He is keeping the system in check and oiling it. Peace of the world at the cost of suppressed rights of living beings is not a justification. The happiness and well-being of the few at the top at the cost of a starving population is not choosing the lesser evil.
Dragon saw the truth and decided to eradicate the evil power system. Even Luffy, who is a 'criminal' by definition, has done exactly the same thing time and again by overthrowing the evil seat of power and evil manipulators. Eg: Crocodile, Walpol, Doflamingo, Hody Jones, Arlong, Enel, and so many more.
Monkey D. Garp is simply a PR person for the World Government to the masses!
And so what if we didn't see Garp's reaction the first time to all these atrocities happening? What matters is that he stayed even after what his reaction could've been, and still he continued to work for the Marines. Not only was he doing that, but he was on an active quest for the next reliable cadets to teach them the way of the Marines. I repeat, he stayed, and he is helping the World Government by letting them continue to use his name as their hero. And he is still here after decades, enabling this oppression by cherry-picking his righteousness!
Why is it so hard for us to buy that Garp's staying with the Marines is actively harming the world?
We are being kind to him as readers because we have known him for a long time. He was introduced to us as a hero: the man who cares for his cadet, the man who chose to protect Ace despite Roger being his enemy, and the man who trained Coby. Yes, he is a hero in the Blue Star world, but to us readers, he shouldn't be a hero ever. Oda is chipping away at his lore bit by bit. The moral compass we thought Grap was is a solid work of fabricated PR machinery to lure the likes of Coby and Kuzan, who are already cracking as they travel the four seas of Blue Star.
As a kid I loved Garp too, now NOPE. No backstory will make me respect him. I will sympathize when it happens because I know there will be a good reason for why he decided this sell-out way. It will make sense; it doesn't mean we have to accept it. That is where it will end for me as a reader.
Because Luffy is the answer to all his doubts and dilemmas that he might've had.
Kindness cannot be conditional and limited; when you choose to help, you help all.
And if I am reminded one more time of how Garp almost killed Akainu for killing Ace! I will behead someone!
Yeah, sure, Garp hates the WG, but he hasn't burnt it down as he should've.
As for the whole Sakazuki thing, I am sorry, but that Old Man took a whole platoon to rescue Coby because he was his dear cadet, but for Ace, he didn't do anything because he was a "criminal".
THE CELESTIAL DRAGONS ARE FUCKING ENSLAVERS!
A 20-year-old young man fighting other pirates was killed for having his Pirate King Dad's blood. Because it made him a born criminal, but the 800-year-old bloodlines sitting on Marijoes, enslaving, raping, murdering and killing people for fun, don't make them born criminals?
GARP DO BETTER!
Adding my Rough Idea about what Garp's deal might've been in points:
I am guessing 800 years back, the survivors of 20 nations lost their original homes.
And the Davy Clan, maybe out of kindness or by decree, gave these people a refuge in the God Valley.
Possibly, they are the only D family line that betrayed the other Ds and led to Joy Boy's failure, or stayed neutral.
And eventually, the 20 families they saved or helped turned on them like crocodiles (pulled an Israel on Palestinians) and began to hunt other D families.
We already saw through Law's family that D people hid the D in their name; Vivi's family did the same. The Ds went into hiding, including the Davy Clan.
Most people hid the Ds in their name for centuries.
So the Ds were clearly hunted down. Almost everyone hid it, or the WG was eradicated bit by bit with the growing power of the Marines.
Except one stupid, tenacious bloodline. Which flaunts its D like it's no big deal, the Monkey Ds.
Dragon understood the assignment and dropped his entire surname, and WG preferred it that way because they keep trying to erase D's existence.
But did Garp bother to hide his own name as a young man or try to teach Luffy that? No.
So my guess is Garp joined the Marines to escape the persecution at the hands of WG, or his father or grandfather or great-grandfather did so to keep the family safe by pledging their loyalty and strength to the Marines like Kuma did to protect Bonney. All to keep the people they love safe. But by the time it came to tarp Grap, it had become an indoctrination practice. He didn't exactly buy into it but made peace with the lesser evil of the two; he chose to take his action of Justice on Roger and not the Celestial Dragons.
WG and Marines cannot come after the people who have shown loyalty for decades, right?
But Garp is still a D, so they treat him like an anomaly still. Like a wolf tamed, not captured. That's why he can use that anomaly status to do some good in a world that's entirely catering to evil. He shone like that white spot of goodness in the black swirl in the Yin and Yang symbol; that is what Garp is in the setup.
Yet, Dragon broke free of this survival indoctrination, and he saw the bigger picture.
By the time it came to Luffy, the same tactics to make him strong and a good Marine royally failed.
That's all for now, folks!
AND DO NOT COME TO DEFEND GARP IN REPLIES AS DEVIL'S ADVOCATE. ODA WILL DO IT FOR HIM!
He's done it at least once (yes I'm coping very well with the summer heat thank you)
One Piece reading log (chap 1156) — The Past Is a Map
⚠️ Spoilers filled discussion, with my fresh thoughts from an excited reader (not a theorist).
First of all, let's spend a bit of time on the cover art. I loved it. We have Roger, Rayleigh my man, Gaban, and then at the center Luffy with the rest of the crew as mini members. The direct inheritors and wing of the Pirate King : Sanji and Zoro. I mean, obviously the whole series is based on inheriting will, but this cover art just encompasses all of it.
Then, we are told idols are navigating on the sea and who do we see?? The Kuja Pirates! This made me so happy and excited. Gloriosa’s younger design is so cool and a bit Boa-like (that's why she is harder on her). And yeah, we always knew she could relate to the lovesickness of Boa because she had one of her own—but I was not expecting hers to be Gold D. Roger. Will she fall for another man from the Rocks and follow them, then? Curious to see how this will unfold. Tritoma, who succeeded Shakky and also died of lovesickness, is also present and super cute <3
Young Roger without his famous mustache is so weird haha xD but loving it. And him trying to kidnap Shakky was so funny. Gaban (like Sanji) almost died from her hotness. And yeah, so confirmed: our little Roger was more sensitive to females than our Luffy xD (yeah I know he had a kid with a woman, but who knows). I’m sorry but the Rayleigh x Shakky scene was so so so cute. I ship them so hard—best couple of the whole One Piece (oh maybe Kuma and Ginny come close).
The Garp vs Roger scene was so cool, I am so excited to see more of them. I missed their interactions, we had barely nothing since Marineford arc flashbacks so this is feeding me up. We saw so little of them in the series, but it's one of my fav dynamics. Excited to see them team up against Rocks Pirates.
After that amazing moment, back to Elbaph. So Loki tried to go to the sea and really wants to join Rocks because he believes he is the most free (so maybe when he sees that Luffy has the Nika fruit, he will consider him the most free and join the crew?) Still made me sad that baby Loki is still not really wanted. But Ida telling him to come live with her is so sweet. I wish we get to see some of that.
Cut to the Pirate Island, Kyo wants to join Rocks. His design is so so cool though. So we know that Rocks wants two fruits. My guess is obviously the Nika fruit (which my guess is still it's the one Harald died protecting) and the second one might be the Yami Yami no Mi (Darkness) fruit that now his son, Teach, has. But yeah, Rocks wanted Harald to eat one of them... kinda curious which one.
They are still looking for the GalleyLa mythical builders... I wonder if Iceberg named his company like that because of that legend or if he has some knowledge about them... Curious, curious.
They are also looking for the frozen bodies of the ancient giants... the ones we know Moria has found and revived. So they may come back later on for the final saga... They are saying even if they come alive again, they will have no reason to listen to us. So will Oars Jr. come back? (Fake-out deaths hehe) Or maybe the older Oars, and we will have to partner up with Moria? (God please no T.T xD I mean he is not a charismatic villain, he gives me the ick, I don't like him and his stupid mouth.)
BTW in all this talk, noticed young Streusen? XD And young Kaido is kinda hot haha. So Kaido kinda wants to force their plan onto Harald, which annoys Rocks and they break into a fight. I wonder why he is against it ? Maybe because of their earlier short-face-off at Mariejoa? Did he realise they would be equally strong and so difficult to force onto?
So Rocks really confirmed that Elbaph is essential for Mariejoa to come down. Is it because Imu is vulnerable to the Nika fruit and they have it? Is it because of strength? Do the giants have an ancient connection to Imu?
∘₊✧──────✧₊
One Piece has always played a lot with the idea of this current generation being a mirror to the older ones, inheriting their will and continuing their journey. But here, I feel it more strongly than ever before. I mean, Rocks almost had all the elements but failed... and I am curious how. Why did Garp and Roger stop him? Garp, logical, because he is a marine and has to protect Mariejoa. But why did Roger? Why did the World Government erase this event ?
And how the fuck is Loki still narrating everything to his brother?
Also, we can see that along our journey, the missing parts from Rock’s journey : our Mugiwaras will have them. (Nika fruit, Oars, Galley-La kinda, etc.)
This chapter makes me think more and more that if Harald continues to refuse Rocks, he will either kill him or maybe Kaido will, to get the Nika fruit, since it's essential to their journey. And I truly believe it's the fruit Elbaph is protecting.
If my little hunch is true, it will be so devastating for my boy, Loki T.T.
Anyway, the scene is set up and I can't wait for the next chapter.
