Elza Soares, the great love of Mané Garrincha, died on the same day 39 years later as the legendary footballer
Elza Soares, one of the greatest Brazilian singers of all time, died at the age of 91 on the afternoon of this Thursday, 20, at his home in the city of Rio de Janeiro, due to natural causes. Thirty-nine years earlier, on January 20, 1983, football player Garrincha died in the same city.
Ms. Soares new songs were even more direct than her earlier ones in addressing social issues, openly advocating for the rights of Black people, gay people, and especially women. In 1999, Soares was declared the “singer of the millennium” by the BBC.
