Olivia Wilde to Direct a Sony Marvel Movie, Could Be Spider-Woman

If you think Sony is resting on its Spider-Man cash cow because it had to delay the rollout of its Spider-Man villain cinematic universe, then you don’t quite understand how desperate Sony is to make money off Spider-Man. The next step in its strange Marvel off-shoot is evidently a new film directed by Olivia Wilde that will focus on a female character from the Spider-verse. A Deadline report states that this character is most likely Spider-Woman.

Wilde is one of the hottest directors in Hollywood right now after pulling in plaudits from her directorial debut, Booksmart. One of the writers of that film, Katie Silberman, will be joining her in writing this new (possibly) Spider-Woman movie, and longtime Spidey producer Amy Pascal will be producing the film.

The film’s screenplay had a previous draft by Gary Spinelli, but the report states that Wilde is looking to completely revamp the project. That means it’s unclear just which Spider-Woman we will be getting. The original Spider-Woman was Jessica Drew, but since her initial turn in the ’70s many characters have taken over including Julia Carpenter and Mary Jane Watson. Regarding the latter, a character with the initials “MJ” has of course already shown up in Spider-Man films that are tied to the MCU, so that might add a layer of confusion. Then again, the Vulture was in the MCU and has made the jump over to Sony’s universe, so anything could happen.

Alongside its stable of Spidey villains, Sony is making a strong push to launch a host of female-led Marvel superhero movies. In addition to Olivia Wilde’s (again — probably) Spider-Woman film, it is also working on movies featuring Madame Web, Black Cat, and Silver Sable. Could we see an all-female superhero team go up against the likes of Venom, Morpheus, and Vulture?

American Made

Reteaming with Tom Cruise a few years on from Edge of Tomorrow, director Doug Liman continues to prove himself one of the more diverse mainstream directors around today transforming Gary Spinelli’s screenplay into one of the most light on its feet and charming biographical movies ever produced in the age of the biopic in which we live.

Based on the exploits of Barry Seal, a man who lived one of those too outlandish to be true lives, American Made is a two hour movie that hurtles along with tremendous energy, never really feeling its length because it never takes a second to let up its assault on the senses.It does a great job of straddling that thin line from which it can revel in the excesses of what it chronicles, while never losing sight of the humanity, of the darkness lurking behind, and driving all of the action along. 

It’s a very effective balancing act, and one continued through one of the films other great strengths, its refusal to take sides. Neither the CIA, nor the Medellin Cartel, nor the titular Seal himself are portrayed in either black or white, its shades of grey all round, and adds to the general feeling of danger around every corner that hangs over the movie. Still, the movies energy keeps things light on its feet, as does Cruise himself.

Released with what seems like far less fanfare than any of his movies for a while, American Made leans more on Cruise’s charm for its success than... Any of his movies for a while. There is far less reliance upon spectacle, set pieces, or plot, and more on the man himself. Three and a half decades on from Risky Business there are still few who can match the mans energy when he’s in the mood. His ability to blend the comedic and dramatic, to skip between the two in the same scene so seamlessly depending on what works best in the moment gives the movie its kind of absurd, and kind of wonderful flavour. It’s zany, but entirely grounded in reality, in the every day, it never sails off too far into the outlandish, and that gives it all real weight when the stakes are upped.

For some it may move a little too briskly and basically to be something that lingers particularly long in the memory, but for me it’s the almost perfect kind of crowdpleaser, quick and fun, with a style all its own, and just enough heart and purposeful intent simmering underneath to make it matter. It never tries to hide what it wants to say, but nothing about the movie is subtle, it just goes about having a blast in tremendously effective fashion. American Made is one of those throwback, pulpy caper movies that’ll probably come and go with minimal attention on the big screen, only to live a mighty long and popular life in the years ahead when folks discover just how damn effectively it goes about doing its thing.
