Gary Delaney 'Purist'
It was a busy Sunday night at the Hull Comedy Festival's official venue 'The Other Space' tonight (Sunday 3rd November) with two very different shows. 'The Other Space' venue stands down Alfred Gelder Street in the 'Scott's' office building. With only a festival banner and a few posters advertising shows outside this really is a festival venue that will give you the feeling of being at the Edinburgh festival where any small nook and cranny becomes a performance space. The converted office also hosts it's own bar where audiences can chat and listen to music before the shows start, and also runs as a general bar just to hang out even if you're not going to a show, a great touch for the festival. Tonight's first show saw one liner comedian Gary Delaney take to the stage to present a "best of" show. Delaney has appeared on 'Mock the Week' many times, however you may be more familiar with his jokes than his name. Described by the BBC as "the man Jimmy Carr tries to be.", Delaney's one liner style had allowed many of his jokes to gain notoriety online and through text. Tonight he addressed this by reading out his top five most famous jokes online. Number one being: "I've started playing Triangle in a reggae band, and ting." A full hour of one liners could become tiring however Delaney regularly changed pace by showing slideshows of leaflets and building signs where he had found jokes that weren't meant to be there. A road sign saying 'Polish War Memorial' Delaney joked was actually a huge sign for the cleaner. Ending with a routine about jokes he had edited into Wikipedia pages was a particular highlight which was only made better by the proof he had actually done it. A great comedy mind and one of the sharpest comedians around Gary Delaney has so far been a highlight at the Festival for me. A great show with hilarious jokes and a must see for any comedy fan.
My new book about Poltergeists is flying off the shelves.
