#FromTheSidelines A lot of attention was paid to Florida Gator kicker Eddy Pineiro after he uncharacteristically missed the PAT last Saturday in the game against LSU. I happened to capture that moment and it ran in the paper on the front page of the sports section along with the article that detailed how the Gators lost 17-16. But that's not the photo I wanted to post here. These are. Because I think they're pretty significant in their own right. To me, they tell the story of what kind of person Eddy is, not what he does, but who he is. It was near the end of warmups and Eddy was sitting on the sidelines, looking out at the field, occasionally talking to another teammate, but mostly sitting quietly, looking like he was focusing on the upcoming game. I heard his name called out and saw him get up and go over to the stands where he greeted a young boy who was wearing a Gator jersey with his name and number on it. Eddy chatted with him for a minute and then had his picture taken with his young fan. I wish I'd been able to get a photo of the two of them from the front, because the enormous smile on the boy's face said it all. Eddy had totally made this kid's day by doing what comes naturally to him...taking time for others. Gator fans were understandably bummed about the loss that day and I'm sure that boy was too. But I have a feeling the loss was overshadowed by the huge win of getting his picture taken with his football idol. I'm a Florida grad. I bleed orange and blue. But when I'm working and covering Gator related events or sports, I'm just a photojournalist who captures images of whatever is happening in front of me. So it's pretty cool when I can go back through those images and find special ones like these, that allow me to have a moment to take pride in my Gators. And it's moments like these, that to me, make players like Eddy #gatorgreats. Yep...it's true...
