i think i saw you from a distance at sitc hey (i went with georgie helen and emma) how was volunteering? i'm considering doing it next year but i wasn't really sure what it would involve bc i've done a lot of volunteering before and it's a mixed bunch with whether or not the perks will outweigh the downsides + missing the actual event but it looked pretty good? i heard there was pizza omg
So, besides the fact that you get to skip the queue in the morning, there are basically no perks. The reason we got pizza on Friday is that we stayed two hours longer than we were supposed to, filling 8000 goodie bags. (Apparently, the organisers underestimated how long that would take :P) We didn't get to go into the green room (apart from to fetch water bottles for YouTubers doing impromptu meet and greets, or else if we had to fetch people to get them on stage), we didn't get free food, we didn't hang out with the YouTubers. We do get money off tickets for next year, and we get to keep our funky green t-shirts, but that's it. I got zero selfies, because we were supposed to be people that the YouTubers could rely on not to ask them to put their 'show face' on. If I spoke to a YouTuber, it was to ask them if they needed a bottle of water or for me to cut off the line, or else to ask them to move because their viewers were blocking passageways. I walked straight past Dan and Phil, because we were backstage and they should not have to worry about people expecting things of them if they're not out front.
I would say that you should volunteer if you thrive on a high-stress environment. On the schedule, I had like four hours break on Sunday, but in reality got about fifteen minutes, because people needed covering, or we needed extra people on M&G1, or every time I sat down someone came up to ask me to solve an issue - downside to the visibility of the t-shirts! You have to really want to be working the event, and be really dedicated to helping people, making sure stuff runs smoothly as possible etc etc.
If you work in customer service in any capacity, you're probably a good fit. If you have experience in crowd control, that's also useful. Actually, some people complained that the volunteers weren't trained in crowd management. I would like to know how many YouTube viewers are!!! Good vocal projection is useful, charisma, the ability to keep smiling all day - all that sort of stuff. I know some of the volunteers were less pleasant than others, which is a shame. I had to duck out at one point because I'd just been shouted at for an hour straight, but besides that managed to keep a show face on, I think!
I had a brilliant time overall, despite the complaints. More than anything else, the sense of camaraderie with the other volunteers and with the security team was great. They were such sweethearts, the security people! Loved 'em. At one point someone asked me if volunteering was fun. I hesitated for a moment and then said, "It's productive." It's good work, that's what it is.
So... hope that helps!
