What's In a Name? Part 27
On The Third Day of Fun I present... a new addition to the oldest series! It's time to look at some kanji! Hiro - 紘 Prefix of Suffix: Suffix Old Meaning: Large New (Standardized) Meaning: Large Found In: Gion Kobu, Pontocho, Miyagawa Cho, and Gion Higashi A masculine sounding kanji, hiro is pretty simple in its meaning, but can sometimes be hard to translate as it modifies other words. It's also a newer kanji that replaces an older kanji with the same pronunciation and close meaning in "広." Examples 市紘 Ichihiro (Gion Kobu): "First Great," This is a case of one that's a bit hard to translate because "First Large" sounds a bit off. もみ紘 Momihiro (Pontocho): "Large Fir Tree," this one has multiple meanings due to the hiragana in the name, but I chose fir tree as its example to keep it sounding nice. ふく紘 Fukuhiro (Miyagawa Cho): "Large Luck," another one with multiple meanings, this was the most common meaning when heard. 叶紘 Kanohiro (Gion Higashi): "Large Wish," a very charming and straightforward name. Katsu/Masaru - 勝 Prefix of Suffix: Both Old Meaning: Victory New (Standardized) Meaning: Victory Found In: Gion Kobu and Kamishichiken Another masculine kanji, what could be more awesome than "victory" in your name? Examples 勝 Masaru (Gion Kobu): "Victory," pretty straightforward and simple. 勝㐂代 Katsukiyo (Kamishichiken): "Era of Rejoicing Victory," a beautiful name for a beautiful woman. Sen - 扇 Prefix of Suffix: Both Old Meaning: Fan New (Standardized) Meaning: Fan Found In: Gion Kobu, Pontocho, and Miyagawa Cho, A staple of the geimaiko's tool kit, fans (in this case, folding fans) also make an appearance in their names! Examples 佳つ扇 Katsusen (Gion Kobu): "Beautiful Fan," very lovely and simple. 市扇 Ichisen (Pontocho): "First Fan," another simple yet nice name. 扇正 Senshō (Miyagawa Cho): "Righteous Fan," an older name but very powerful.
