Memoirs of an Eisor
“What is Sumo but a dance between giants? What is business but a dance between companies? I should like to know every kind of dance” – Memoirs of a Geisha, FILM that you know.
Today I had the pleasure of seeing traditional Japanese dances done by Geisha. It was great. The actual event was only about an hour or so long but there was audience participation, beautiful kimonos, song and dance as well as NHK Shizuoka documenting the whole thing! (NHK is like Japan’s BBC).
At the beginning we were seated and it seemed quite serious. None of us foreigners had dressed particularly nicely but our chaperones all seemed to have made a little bit more effort… it didn’t really matter, I suppose it’s like any performance event, when you go to the theatre, sometimes you dress a little special but it’s also perfectly cool to wear whatever.
It had also been unfortunate that I had brought my camera but left the SD card in my laptop so that was really useless. HOWEVER I did download a silent camera to my phone so that I could take silent photos of the dances… however te quality wasn’t as good so I gave up and just took them with the sounds… haters goin’ hate.
So I will give details of the event. They danced with fans and we saw their beautiful range of kimonos. One of them was a brilliant pink and goldish sort of rainbow? Not rainbow as there were only 2 colours but like metallic pink and gold/bronze? It was gorgeous.
After the first dance there were games! This was great as it completely broke the ice, the geisha invited audience members to play 1 of 3 games. The first involved a block of wood in the middle that you either tapped in turns or one of you took it away and then the other would put there fist in the blocks place (all done in time to music). The idea is that you try to catch the other person out. I played this game and the lady said ‘Jouzu’ which means ‘you are the best person in the whole world and I want to make you a geisha because talent like yours is SO rare!’ but I said ‘I’m sorry, but I can’t abandon my students’. We’ll never know how my life could have turned out if I had just said ‘yes’. It actually just means ‘great/skilled’.
The next game was a janken game, again to music, (Janken is Japanese rock paper scissors) and the loser had to widen their legs. Basically, you kept going until one of you falls over:
The final game really needs to be called ‘Bum Bashing’ because its objective was to bash the person off the pillow with your bum. You stood with your backs to each other on opposite sides of the pillow and in time to music you could either take one foot forward to avoid the bash or you could try bashing the other person. I suppose you could call the game ‘Bish, Bash, Dodge’?
It was a really great event and my friend got interviewed for NHK but I’m out this evening so I won’t see it :( . I love my language class, I really can’t thank them enough.
I especially love my Japanese mother, Hira who took me to a gorgeous café yesterday:
She’s the best!
