why the defiance of gender in Danger & Eggs is better

I’m gonna nitpick Star Vs. The Forces of Evil in this post, but don’t assume that means I don’t like it.

I know network shows can’t get away with as much as a non-network show, BUT when we look at Danger & Eggs it handles gender acceptance sort of like a soft blanket, meanwhile in network shows they hit you with it like a mallet. I’m using SVTFOE’s Marco Diaz as my counter-argument here. For those who don’t know, our boy Marco is surrounded by theories about his gender, this is based around his feminine tendencies, and willingness to wear a dress and masquerade as a princess. He actually grows into his princess Marco role over time as well. When you look at Phillip and D.D., they also cross dress on occasions throughout the show, but Danger & Eggs sets up this environment where it seems normal. There are a lot of background things that make alternative gender seem normal in the show, like the fact that Chicken Paw Park has gender neutral restrooms, not adorned with the usual “all gender restroom” label, but simply labeled as “bathroom”. Phillip himself doesn’t actually get hit with pronouns that often, and neither does D.D.. It makes them cross dressing seem normal, or D.D. wanting to have facial hair normal.

The painful thing about the execution of Marco’s gender defiance in SVTFOE is highlighted by Star and Janna picking on him (they are friends so it’s passable) but you’d never see anyone pointing out gender defying habits in D&E. The most insulting blow for SVTFOE came in the form of Marco’s enemy, Meteora, showing the other princesses he was a boy, by pulling his dress open to show his chest hair. (that episode was painfully transphobic). To the princesses credit, they didn’t care. Star Vs. has made no attempts to be casually gender accepting, but rather occasionally making a point about it by waving it in our faces.

When Milo was introduced in D&E no one asked why their pronouns are gender neutral, because that’s not actually important to befriending a NB person, D.D. and Phillip simply called Milo “they” and went on playing music. Additionally if a typical network show introduced a trans character like Zadie, she’d be berated by questions, and probably a “dude in a dress joke” depending on the show. meanwhile we get D.D. “wanna collab on a song?” and nothing more.

What I’m trying to say is if D.D. Danger came out as trans, it wouldn’t be a big deal because of the world that the show has made, it’s so welcoming. meanwhile the idea of Marco being trans feels so far fetched because SVTFOE’s world hasn’t made those same strides for acceptance.

Gender " norms " are so common and naturally instilled within us that it's not until you actually sit and observe the world that you realize how much they play apart in our everyday life. Society uses gender to determine rank, class and status. Everything in this world evolves, that's a never ending process so why is it so hard for people to accept gender evolution? Why does a male make more than a female even if she does a better job with the task at hand ? Why are people who don't identify with Male or Female often criticized ? Who we are or who we identify with should have nothing to do with how far we get in life or what opportunities we are able to partake in. You are expected to act a certain way if you are a male and a completely different way if you're a female. When discussing social norms , there is no in between for some people , society feels that anything that varies outside of a male or female is abnormal. Society needs to learn to adapt and adjust just like it does with other things.
