Girl Cut From Baseball Team-Gender Descrimination at 7 years old
Recently, in the new heard something that had me scratching my head. A 7 year old girl named Anna has played baseball with her younger brother for years was dismissed from her team even though she was a qualified. All the boys liked having her on their team but, the only reason she was kicked off was because she was a girl.
More than forty years ago, I was the best sand lot baseball player and much better than the prepubescent boys. It was my dream to play baseball but girls were not allowed on official little league teams.
Forty years later, I am glad to say things have changed. We have come a long way to diffuse gender discrimination in sports. But have things changed enough? In this situation, the reasons for the coach to dismissed the girl as well as some other male players was due to the fact that he wanted to change to a more competitive league that does not allow girls. Not everything is fair in sports decisions and there is no crying in baseball. I am trying to cut this coach some slack. This is a team in a small town with few leagues and few options. Ultimately, the boys will grow stronger and the girl will no longer play at their level. In a larger town, there are a variety of levels and choices for everyone to play. Okay. This is all the defense I can make for this coach's choice to dismiss the girl. The team is for 6-7 year old kid. Isn't it a little early to get the competitive spirit burned into their brains. Anna could improve the team with her skills now as well as their sportsmanship. Come on coach..... it really all about winning?
