AN: I was gonna add Law to this but I had no idea how it would play out?? Maybe if I find other characters with hats I’ll do a part two with him. Anyways, enjoy! I struggled trying to stay ic
LUFFY blinked awake from the nap he’d accidentally taken on you. He could still feel wood brushing against his leg. His cheek had been resting somewhere between your shoulder and neck. For a second, he stayed there, eyes half lidded, mind blissfully empty.
But it was hard not to notice something was missing.
He shot up so fast it nearly made you jump.
Both hands immediately flew to the top of his head, a little hesitant, nothing. Then his fingers patted around the ground insistently. Luffy’s expression crumpled into deep concentration as he crouched to look around the deck.
“Where’d it go..?” He huffed, face beginning to deepen into a frown.
You watched him for another few seconds before a laugh escaped. His head snapped toward the sound.
“Oh.” You reached up, fingers brushing the familiar straws resting on your head. “Sorry for borrowing your hat while you were asleep. It got kind of hot.”
You adjusted it absentmindedly, splinters poking your finger. “Was that okay? I can give it back now, my bad.”
His mind, usually so quick to jump from one thing to another, had simply taken a moment.
The straw hat sat just a little too big on you, casting a soft shadow over your eyes. A few strands of your hair had escaped beneath the brim. You’d put it on so casually, like it wasn’t the single most important thing he owned.
It should’ve made him nervous, or maybe a bit easier to take the hat back.
Naturally, he trusted his crew with his things, and this wasn’t the first time he’s seen one of them worn it.
So why did this feel different? His heartbeat gave one hard thump against his chest. He blinked, his mind lingering on a single idea.
You looked nice with his hat. The thought appeared so naturally that he didn’t question it.
He scratched the back of his neck, still staring. He didn’t really know how to explain it, not yet. It just made him feel happy.
“No.” The word escaped before he even realized he’d spoken.
You tilted your head. “What?”
He leaned closer without thinking, his grin returning with all the earnestness that made Luffy, well.. Luffy. It surprised you nonetheless.
“Keep it on.” His smile widened, pressed the hat against your head. “I like it!”
It was your turn to stare. “You like it?”
“Yeah!” He answered as if it were obvious, folding his arms subconsciously. “What’s wrong with that?”
“There…” You felt yourself grow hesitant from the way he stared at you. He’s never looked this interested in something that wasn’t food before, “..There isn’t anything wrong with it.”
“So you’ll keep on wearing it?”
A awkward laugh escaped you. “Sure, why not.” You shrugged your shoulders, easing slightly. “I’ll keep wearing it.”
Luffy’s grin somehow grew even wider. He plopped himself back beside you, close enough that your shoulders bumped.
It was the same position as earlier.
But it still wasn’t normal at all though.
Every time he glanced elsewhere, his attention wandered right back to you wearing his hat. His stomach fluttered strangely. He frowned at the feeling for all of three seconds before deciding it wasn’t bad.
He rested his chin in his palm, still smiling to himself. “You should wear it more.”
You raised an eyebrow, trying to get comfortable while the sea was calm. “But no one gets to wear it.” You stated bluntly.
“I know.” He leaned back into the wood. “But you can.”
As sweet as it was, you knew how much he loved the damn thing. He’d take it back by dinner time. So maybe this one time, you can enjoy the attention.
..Okay, maybe just a little.
It wasn’t because he thought it’d been stolen. There were only so many places something could disappear to on the Moby Dick. Still, it was his hat. He’d grown so used to the weight of it, it felt strange without it now.
Crewmates didn’t even offer much help, besides Marco at least.
He pushed the door to the infirmary open, “Hey Deuce—” His sentence died on his tongue.
You were sitting beside Deuce, elbows resting on the table as the two of you looked over the same medical textbook. At least, that was what he’d noticed first.
The second thing was his hat perched comfortably atop your head. You glanced up as the door creaked open, grinning immediately when you spot Ace.
Ace’s mouth felt oddly dry. “Is..” His brain refused to cooperate. “..Is that my hat?”
You stood at an almost infuriatingly leisurely pace, brushing invisible wrinkles from your clothes before taking a few steps toward him.
The brim dipped slightly over your eyes.
It looked ridiculously good. His heart skipped a beat, though to be honest that was far from the first time you’ve done that to him.
You stopped just within arm’s reach. “Is that okay?” Your voice had gone quieter now, almost uncertain. “I only seen it on the floor, so..”
Ace stared, he’d seen people wear it before. Hell, he’s definitely dropped it more than he’d like when fighting.
His face suddenly felt warm. Ah, damn it, you were waiting for an answer.
“Are you kidding?” A laugh burst from him before he could stop it. “That’s so hot.”
You blinked, face immediately shocked from the bluntness.
Even Deuce looked up from his book.
Ace looked just as speechless as everyone else. Heat exploded across his cheeks. “I mean—” He rubbed the back of his neck, laughing awkwardly. “I meant—you just…” He gestured vaguely toward your face. “Nevermind.”
You covered your mouth, trying not to laugh for the sake of everyone.
“Shut up.” He huffed at the end. “If you’re gonna keep laughing, at least come here.” Without waiting for permission, his fingers found your cheek almost absentmindedly. He gave it a light pinch, grinning.
He didn’t have a single plan, if he was already himself, there wasn’t much left to lose. “There.”
“I got my revenge for you laughing.”
“You embarrassed yourself.”
“You could’ve just said I looked nice.”
Your laughter spilled out this time, bright enough to make the corners of his own mouth lift despite himself.
He’d wanted to tease you. You’d been wearing his hat with that unmistakably sly expression, practically inviting him to stumble over himself.
His hand, still resting against your cheek, loosened without him realizing.
“Besides,” he said more quietly, “when you’ve got my hat..” He tugged the brim down just a little over your forehead. “I’ve got an excuse to come find you whenever I want to.”
You looked at him with an amused sort of fondness. “You did that anyway.”
He thought about it for a second, “…Guess I do.” There wasn’t really an argument against that.
“Then just take it back.” You said, grabbing the top of it.
He looked at the hat. “Nah.”
“I think it looks better on you.” The words slipped out much more quietly than the first compliment.
God, the things you did to him.
A loud sigh came from across the room. “Can you two do this literally anywhere else?” When you both turned, you realize Deuce hadn’t moved from his chair. His face was deep in the medical textbook, trying his best to ignore you guys.
SABO had noticed his hat was missing long before he actually started looking for it.
Not because he was particularly attached to the object itself, he was— but because he’d developed the habit of absentmindedly reaching up to adjust it whenever he was thinking.
The moment his gloved fingers met nothing but blond hair for the fourth time, he finally sighed. “That’s weird.”
He retraced his steps through the halls, asking a few passing revolutionaries if they’d happened to see it.
Most hadn’t, and Koala looked especially innocent. That alone should’ve warned him for whatever he came across.
Eventually, he found you standing on one of the quieter balconies overlooking the sea, elbows resting against the railing. His top hat sat perfectly atop your head, you hadn’t noticed him yet.
For just a moment, Sabo forgot to move. The afternoon sun caught the edge of the goggles wrapped around the hat. It was.. unexpected? Yea. The hat had always been unmistakably his, seeing it on someone else should’ve looked odd.
Instead it looked strangely natural— his pulse stumbled once. How curious.
He’d always thought you were lovely, that wasn’t exactly groundbreaking information for him to start realizing.
Something about seeing you wearing something so distinctly his made the image linger in his mind far longer than it should have. It suited you, very well.
His lips curved before he even realized they had.
Ah. So that’s what everyone’s been smiling about.
You turned at the faint sound of his footsteps, the second your eyes met, a sly smile spread across your face.
“Hello.” Sabo folded his arms comfortably, “I was wondering where my hat had disappeared to.”
You reached up, pretending to feel the brim for the first time. “Oh?” A perfectly innocent blink. “Is this yours?”
He almost laughed. “It bears a striking resemblance.”
You tilted your head thoughtfully. “I suppose it does.”
He took a slow step closer. “You’ve stolen from the Chief of Staff.”
“I didn’t think you’d mind.”
“And what gave you that impression?”
Your smile only widened, leaning back into the railing. “You haven’t asked for it back.”
He could respect that. It’s just unfortunate for you, you’d picked the wrong person to play this game with. His smile became just a little sharper, tilting his head.
“I wonder why.” He stopped directly in front of you now. Close enough that you had to tip your chin up ever so slightly to maintain eye contact. “But where would the fun be in that?”
For the first time, your confidence faltered.
He leaned forward just enough for the brim of the hat to lightly bump against his forehead.
“So.” His voice dropped into something softer. “Have you finished admiring my stuff?”
That caught you off guard. “I wasn’t admiring—”
“I was borrowing it because it was hot.” You rolled your eyes, pushing him back with your palm. With the way he willingly let it happened, you could only guess his next move.
“And the weather became unbearable only after you found my hat?”
He hummed thoughtfully, eyes never leaving yours. “Okay.”
You blinked, eyes narrowing. He wasn’t particularly the guy to go on like this, you’d know. Or maybe you’re learning something new about Sabo. “..You’re fine with it?”
Quite frankly, you were hoping for more of an annoyed Sabo who was pish posh about a hat.
“Why not, the hat suits you.”
You opened your mouth, but it was too dry.
There wasn’t the slightest hesitation, he was so casual about it as if you’d naturally grow accustomed to the bluntness. Without warning, he leaned in again.
How unfair, he wasn’t even flustered. Meanwhile, your brain had completely been all absorbed with him. Satisfied with your speechlessness, Sabo lightly adjusted the brim for you.
“There.” He stepped back to admire his work. “Looks nice.”
“You…” You finally found your voice. “You aren’t even going to ask for it back?”
He smiled. “Eventually.” He clasped his hands behind his back, eyes sparkled with unmistakable amusement.
You narrowed your eyes. “I feel like I’m being manipulated.”
He admitted it so cheerfully that it robbed you of any comeback. “You could at least pretend to deny it.”
Damn, you were more irritated than him.
“But then I’d be lying.” His gloved hand rested lightly atop the hat one last time before he gave the brim a tiny, playful tap.
He hadn’t even needed to take the hat back. In fact, leaving it exactly where it was was far more rewarding.
After all, every time he caught sight of you wearing it, he’d get to watch that same expression bloom across your face all over again.
That was a victory worth savoring.
