Dear WIP reader,

This is a rather smaller chapter, as it's made up of three separate routes: a) Not finding the stranger; b) Finding the stranger with the ghoul; c) Finding the stranger with Marsh (ghoul optional).

Thank you so much to everyone who has been sending me typos, mistakes, and bugs, especially when you point out how to fix them!

There are still a few things I haven't fixed yet. Some I just haven't got around to (like Larry's fight, shard, or adding more interactivity with the Crown), while others I'm leaving as they are because I like the way they read (such as "are you come" or some other old-fashioned phrasing).

That said, I've fixed a lot thanks to all of you. Love you!

Also, on another note, while I don't think I'm breaking any rules, please let me know if I am and whether anything needs to be censored.

Run Cried the Crawling is an Interactive Fiction set in a world in which humanity inhabits giant trees. This text-based twine game follows you, the heir of one of the five trees of The Thicket, as you are tasked with completing a pilgrimage to legitimize the claim to your father’s Duchy.

During your journey you’ll discover that everyone has secrets, including the Duchy you’re fighting to keep. 

Fight otherworldly monsters, speak to the gods, build relationships with your companions and find out the truth beneath the leaves.

SYNOPSIS

Ten years ago, your father was assassinated. They said it was a successful hit-job done by a rival gang or another criminal family and closed the case. But you know better… You were there during the attack after all, even though not exactly in his last moments. You know it’s not that simple.

He deserves better. He was a vigilante, helping the citizens of Elysium City equally when its own superheroes were too busy maintaining their public image and reputation to even bother helping the ‘little folks’. But when they found out about his true identity as the heir of the infamous Morozov Criminal Family posthumously, they quickly closed the investigation as soon as they arrested the one surviving attacker out of the many that participated in that bloody night and considered that justice. There was no more fame or reputation to be gained for finding true justice for a long-retired vigilante who turned out to be a criminal as well, so why spend the energy and manpower? But you won’t accept it. You will seize the truth on your own and spit it on their faces. At least, that’s what you always tell yourself…  

For a decade you have been trapped and tortured in a perpetual hell of your own making, reliving that bloody night every year and furious at yourself for not being a step closer to finding out the truth. Every year, you promise your father that you will bring him the justice that he deserved. And you mean it. You won’t rest until you find the one who killed him. Even if you have to tear apart this rotten city from the inside out, you will stop at nothing to have your vengeance. 

This is your tale, Revenger, and you will decide how you will seize your well-deserved vengeance. Will you finally break the vicious cycle and rise above it all? Or will you become another part in the long blood-soaked cycles of vendetta?

THE PLOT

The world of ‘Vendetta’ is very similar to our own, except that around 35% of the population worldwide are born with abilities and powers. The setting of the story is a fictional metropolis city called Elysium City (located on the West Coast US), where almost half of its population are powered people. Its lenient laws on the usage of powers help make the superhero business and scene in the city boom almost exponentially. 

You will play as the child of an ex-vigilante (who was also the heir of a criminal family) and a famous and legendary superheroine. You are lucky enough to be born with two abilities: Gravikinesis (gravitational field manipulation) and Umbrakinesis (shadow manipulation).

You should have been living peacefully by now, if only your father wasn’t murdered a decade ago. Most of those years you spent living with your uncle as he tried his best in raising you and your childhood best friend, who was also orphaned not long after your father died. 

Now, ten years later, you are not closer to finding out the truth about who killed your father. That is until a recent series of high-profile murders of the city’s well-known superheroes start popping up. And the next target on the list? Your mother. Now, she comes begging for your help, assuring you that the group that has been killing off the heroes is somehow connected to the group that carried out the hit against your father.

She might be lying… or she might be telling the truth. No matter what, you’ll take any path that will lead you closer to finding your father’s killer. A step closer to justice for your father.  A step closer to your vengeance…

Your parents are the biggest Vampire mobsters in Ves Arcanus and are the heads of the notorious Florentia Family. On your 25th birthday, your parents gift you with an important role in the family: running Blood Bank, their nightclub and base of operations. Unfortunately, a few years ago your first love, a burlesque dancer at Blood Bank, was murdered. The culprit was never found …supposedly. With your new position within the Ves Arcanus Underground, maybe you can finally find answers and serve justice or revenge.

In the city of Ves Arcanus, you’ll encounter Supernaturals of several different species and work alongside the most powerful families in organized crime: the Arcanus Six. The Six includes the Florentia Family, the Lombardi Family, the Seth Family, the De Mevius Family, the Sundale Family, and the Vatura Family.

Lisa/Leon Whitlock, 27- Faerie

A young director who got lucky and stayed lucky, Whitlock could be your way into important Faerie circles. They’re fun, sweet, and adventurous enough to sneak around with you given the right motivation. Like all artists, they’re unpredictable and don’t seem quite ready to settle down yet.

Alessia/Alessandro “Ale” Lombardi, 30- Vampire

The eldest child and former heir of the Lombardi Family, Ale is no stranger to crime, intimidation, and violence. They’ve used their family’s influence to fund a political career and leave mob life behind, supposedly. They take some time to warm up but are a loyal friend and lover once they do.

Charlotte/Charles “Charlie” Cole, 35- Cambion

After a rough childhood, Charlie became a cop to help troubled youth like them. They don’t love being a cop, but they feel it’s the best way they can help kids. Charlie has turned their life around, but maybe you can persuade them to break the rules for you.

Serafina/Sero De Mevius, 24- Witch

A spoiled rich kid with an Ivy league education, De Mevius isn’t like most mobsters you know. They have an air of mystery and don’t really seem to care about upholding their family’s name. They love to spend their dads’ money on parties, charities, and maybe on you too.

Dion Parker, 25- Dragonkin (half dragon/half human)

Your friend since high school, Dion is just along for the ride as you look for answers. Whether they agree with your methods, Dion sticks around to hopefully keep you out of trouble. Your parents trust them to keep books at the club so they’re always nearby.

Eliana/Elio “El” Rivera, 28- Unknown

El will do most anything for a story, especially when it keeps them alive and out of jail. They are fearless and stubborn as a bull, but that may be a front to hide how alone they feel in Ves Arcanus. El has eyes and ears everywhere in Ves Arcanus, but can you get close enough to learn their secrets?

Looks like I've got an interview scheduled for that design job I jokingly applied to because my gran sent it to me. It's nice to be wanted but I still know they can't afford to pay me a wage that would allow me to afford housing.

Now that I've actually got an interview a little problem has come up, and that problem is that I look fruity as hell. There is a tiiiiiiiny possibility that this southern business owner with a 'god and guns' facebook profile is not queerphobic but I wouldn't put money on it.

Question is: Do I double down on the butch/masc look I'm more comfortable with for the hell of it, or do I go high femme to further the deception? I'd need to borrow a wig but I've been harassed in the workplace enough to know I could work that angle. I'd be inclined to go masc if I were taking this seriously because obviously only men get taken seriously and I've already met my life quota of being talked down to. Not that that would fully work among bigots. I mean maybe if I got a nice fake mustache but those are expensive.
