Gender Normitive Binary BS
My mom wants to get a picture of all my grandmother’s great grandkids. My sibling’s kids and cousins and she wants to put them in themed t-shirts, which ok fine, it’s cheesy but they’re all little so it could be cute.
We were talking about colors for these matching shirts and the next thing I know she’s suggesting we put the girls in pink and the boys in blue.
I was like ugh please don’t do that I’ll like totally throw up at the awefulness, that’s a terrible idea.
The conversation continued:
Mom: what’s wrong with it?
Me: it’s reinforcing the gender binary
Mom: no it’s not
Me: you really think putting girls in pink and blues in blue doesn’t reinforce the idea that pink is for girls and blue is for boys
Mom: that’s not what I meant by it
Me: it might not be what you meant but it still reienforces the idea
Mom: it’s not hurting anyone
Me: just because you think it’s not hurting anyone doesn’t make that true (thinking:me mom I’m hurt by this bs) and I don’t think we should be teaching it too the kids
Mom: I don’t think you can criticize the older generation for this, this is how we grew up it’s what we know
Me: that doesn’t mean I have to stay quiet and say nothing when I feel something is wrong
This led to a conversation about how I’m too passionate for my own good and maybe I should tone it down a bit so I don’t upset people. Yep, that’s never been said to an AFaB person before// sarcasm.
My parents were generally ok with letting me do what I wanted as a kid but I could see the difference in the way my boy cousins were treated and the way femininity was forced on me and I was frustrated by it. I see now the way my nephew is discouraged from doing anything remotely precived as feminine and I get sooo upset for him.
My family can’t even see how much emphasis they put in gender and I’m causing a problem when I point it out. Uuuugggh
As an agender person I have to spend more money buying both and mixing them
strangers are just that- strangers. if they get it wrong, thats on them. they dont know you. the people who matter and love u will respect u being trans masc, even if u like girly things. do wat u want, gender is a fuck
I really appreciate you saying this, this is all very true,,
Yeah I know who I am isn’t dependent on others, I just need the confidence to believe in it
Thank you! I do feel better on this matter <3
it’s so nice to just. be shirtless in like cargo pants in my own home like just existing
like there’s an insane amount of unecessarily gendered things
but i think perhaps one of the most ridiculous is fucking
glasses
they all look exactly the same!!!! what the fuck!!
your gender isn’t what’s in your pants, your gender is how loud you sneeze
I’m starting my first full time job soon and my boss had called to make sure I was prepared for my first day and asked me preferred name and said they’re using that for everything and asked for my pronouns and.. I don’t know.. I have been closeted about my gender for so long it’s hard accepting that there are accepting people out there..
