I hope the TBOL fandom is just as physically ill about Manolo not even thinking twice before offering Xibalba his life as I am (i have not seen the tumblr fandom for this movie)
(But seriously like. That’s just not cool. Ow. it sort of slaps us in the face with this idea that he doesn’t care or doesn’t think others would care about his life. That seeing Maria is easily better. Like it’s only vaguely hinted but the idea that he didn’t hesitate because he assumed Carlos and his grandmother wouldn’t care if he were dead due to how they treat him… To Manolo, the payout was greater if he were dead. Not to mention he might have been spurred on by Joaquin and General Posada’s words)
im sorry but this is what the gillenormand-pontmercy family looks like in the book actually

I want all your thoughts about Maya and the Three as well as The Book of Life (remember I'm Mexican bitch so I reserve EVERYTHING LATINA RIGHT to judge your answer >:3)
*claps hands together* HERE WE GO TIME TO YAP ABOUT THE BEST MOVIE EVER.
I literally grew up watching this movie. My earliest memory is showing it to my best friend at a sleepover when I was like 6.
My entire WORLD as a kid was Book of Life. Got my first phone, what was the first thing in my music library? Book of Life. Every birthday and when I was sick, what would I pick? Book of Life. Hell, I wrote a self-insert as Manolo's older sister who was best friends with Maria and in love with Joaquin(before I figured I was gay, but like...Joaquin)
Headcanon Time!
This one has a bit of angst.
I think that Manolo and Joaquín, at some point during the ten years that María was in Spain, their personalities and ideals finally collided and it ended in an argument that separated them for a long time.
What do I mean by this? We all know that Joaquín had become arrogant and selfish over time and had focused more on being the hero of San Angel who had forgotten the friendship he had with Manolo and seeing him more as a rival.
Manolo was obviously affected by this. One thing led to another and, well, they both parted ways. I don’t exactly know how would end up arguing, but I’ll think about it.
Also, both General Posada and Carlos were a little to blame (mostly the General).
Book of Life theory:General Posada and Joaquin deleted “scenes”
After scrolling through Gorge Gutierrez’s Tumblr blog mexopolis like a totally normal person would guys Im normal I promise,I stumbled upon this thread of Book of Life related designs and scrapped ideas. What caught my attention however, were two rough sketches of young Joaquin- an older kid and a teenager-interacting with General Posada:
These two shots seemingly take place during the music cutscene depicting Manolo and Joaquin growing up.On both of these pictures we can see Joaquin looking self-assured,smug even.Meanwhile Maria’s father has either guarded or concerned face, seemingly because of Joaquin. The shot on the left demonstrates it the best- here Mondragon Jr is training with a mannequin, while Posada tries to guide the boys hand with his,as if to show him the move.General has a displeased expression, but teenage Joaquin has pretty much the “I’m better then you old man” look. These scenes are interesting in a way that in the original movie,we never see General Posada being annoyed with Joaquin, thinking of him as “a son he never had”(he sure does love Maria). So this change in their relationship may have several reasons:
