Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) is an anionic surfactant used in a number of molecular biology applications. Its most notable feature is its denaturing action towards protein. It is commonly used in polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis for protein separation. It is also used in nucleic acid extraction procedures for the disruption of cell walls and dissociation of nucleic acid:protein complexes.
