Bio Hello! My name is Geneva Jonick. I am a multimedia artist who currently is a student at UCSC, and resides in Santa Cruz, CA. I was born and raised in Oakland, California. I have used art practice to experience clarity through the fog. I keep journals in which I free-form write, sketch my surroundings, and create mixed-media collages from fascinating scraps I find while exploring my city. This practice has been around for almost as long as I’ve been alive. I have journals, diaries, and scrapbooks, dating back to ages 3 or 4. These books include pages on pages of writing, doodles, art inspiration, key words, quotes, lingering thoughts, and patterns. I continue to use this practice almost every day to connect to myself to my environment, wherever I may be. While journaling and scrapbooking is my preferred medium, I have created art in many areas - sculptural ceramics, charcoal drawing, digital media - photography & film, sculptural installation, and most recently, my focus in the school setting has been oil & acrylic painting. My acrylic and oil paintings consist of colorful but strange landscapes, surreal figurative forms sitting, lounging, waiting. I use painting to explore a love of the colorful world I live in. I has always seen art as a deep connection to oneself, and I have always used it as such. It is a powerful, emotional tool and its therapeutic aspects are irreplaceable. Creating art in this way to specifically explore dream-like landscapes; the foggy, dreary, magical. Though my work, I hope to capture the mental & social state of myself and the external world to which I sit and watch. Snapshotting a specific moment, whether dull or beautiful, has been my focus in my art practice over the last few years.
