Heaven on Earth (Genius: Picasso AU - Carles Casagemas x Reader)

a/n: I’ve been wanting to make Carles happy for a while now, watching the show I felt so bad for him! So while the series I’m writing for him doesn’t come out, enjoy this little one shot.

Carles opened his eyes slowly, a bright white light made him close them again. Was this heaven? He didn't imagine he would go to heaven... He definitely wasn't complaining, but it was certainly unexpected.

"Mr. Casagemas?" you leaned over him as you saw him move. "Good, you are awake!"

"Are you an angel?" Carles smiled, his voice slightly raspy.

You laughed, shaking your head while quickly checking to see if he was okay. It's been almost a week since his friends had brought him, at some point, the doctors started to worry he wouldn't wake up, but you didn't lose hope, coming to see him at least once a day. Sometimes you'd bump into his self-proclaimed best friend Pablo, who came all the way from Spain and visited regularly.

"I'm not an angel, but you're close... I'm a nurse."

"So I'm still alive?" he stared back at you with those devoted eyes, still completely disoriented, which wasn't surprising. After taking a bullet in the head one does tend to get a little confused.

"Thankfully, Mr. Casagemas."

"Ugh, no! I wasn't supposed to be alive! How am I going to live in a world without Germaine?"

You sighed, having seen your fair share of lovers blinded by their adoration who tried to take their own lives for a woman (or a man) who didn't love them back. You always did your best to help them, but it was hard when doctors themselves didn't really care about the patient's mental well-being.

"I'm sure there are other things in this world to appreciate, sir. Maybe other women, your family, or your job..."

"There are no other women, my parents are in Barcelona, and I am horrible at my job."

"What do you do?" you have been imagining the answer to this question for a while.

"I'm an artist."

"And you think you're bad at it?"

"I know I'm bad at it, I completely lost my inspiration... Have you ever been in love?"

"Yes," you confessed for some reason you didn't really understand. "Yes, I have."

"Are you still with him?" Carles asked, sitting up slowly.

"No, he left."

"Then you understand my pain! How did you manage to just keep living?"

"I don't know, one day after the other, I suppose..." you had never really stopped to think about that.

Once upon a time you fell in love, he was a wonderful man, but you were not enough for him, so he left. It really hurt, but at some point, it stopped, or at least it stopped hurting as much.

"What is your name?"

"y/n."

"y/n, this world is not worth living in without Germaine. She was the light of my life, and now she's with another man."

"But I bet you were happy before you met her, were you not?" you sat down on a chair next to his bed.

"Yes, I guess I was, but I don't remember how."

"When you are not enough to someone else, you must learn to be enough to yourself first. Only then you can find someone who will love you for who you are."

"No woman will love me for who I am," Carles' eyes filled with tears that he quickly wiped away. "I am not even a man, I can't even do the most basic things a man is supposed to."

"Can you breathe, Mr. Casagemas?"

"Carles, please, Mr. Casagemas is my father."

"Very well, can you breathe, Carles?"

"Yes, of course, but..."

"Can you think?"

"Yes."

"Then you are a man."

"I don't think you understand..." he turned red with embarrassment. "I cannot... satisfy a woman."

For a second you stopped to think, what the hell was he talking about? At your confused look, Carles laughed weakly.

"What do you mean?"

"I mean I cannot..." he shook his head in frustration, but soon realized it was a bad idea when he felt a throbbing headache. "I can't pleasure a woman like a man is supposed to."

"Sexually?"

"Yes," Carles looked down, defeated.

"That is precisely why my lover left."

"Excuse me?" he looked up at you, now he was the confused one.

"I don't like sex all that much," you were not sure why you were sharing something so personal with a patient, but if it would make him feel any better, then it was worth it. "I don't feel like a relationship needs sex all the time, it just doesn't make sense to me how much people seem to value it."

"Really?" Carles seemed perplexed, he couldn't believe a person like you even existed. "So he left?"

"Yes, he wanted more, and I could not give it to him."

"What an absolute fool! He had a beautiful woman who loved him..." he stopped when he realized what he just said.

You smiled to yourself, it's been a while since anyone had called you beautiful. Whoever Germaine was, she was very dumb for letting a man like him go.

"Thank you," you looked away blushing. "Besides, lots of men deal with this problem and manage to overcome it... Excuse my indiscretion, but do you use drugs? Drink too much maybe?"

"Yes, and yes," there was no reason to lie.

"Do you get nervous when you are..." he nodded in response. "Seems like we found the problem, it's not you."

"So you are saying I'm not hopeless?"

"Absolutely not," you chuckled. "There is more to this world, life is always worth it. Working here I've seen way too many people fighting with every ounce of their strength to stay alive. Being alive is a gift, you really shouldn't take it for granted because of someone else."

"You are right," Carles stared deep into your eyes, thinking about everything else, all of his failures, all of his vices... None of that was unfixable, he was still young, healthy, there was always another day to try again. "Maybe it's a good thing I'm still here."

"I think it's a great thing, Carles, and I am sure you will find the perfect woman who doesn't care about those things."

"I think I might already have..." he gave you a meaningful look. "That is if you are interested."

Your heart leaped in your chest as you got up, part of you wanted him to actually mean it... he was sweet, handsome, and seemed like an interesting person.

"I will go get your dinner, Carles, don't move, huh?"

"See? We are already having dinner together! That's a start, isn't it?" he smiled, what a gorgeous smile he had.

"Yes, I think so..."

"Also, y/n, querida, would you possibly find me some paper and something I can draw with? I think I finally have some inspiration again."
