(1)So, going back to the theory about Smilodon and other sabre toothed cats having a larger upper lip, what about barbourofelis(hope I'm shirking that right) and other large chinned sabre toothed cats. Could they have possibly had a pocket? I had
(2) asked another blog about it as well. I believe that a theory for the chin was to help support the teeth or something(at least some random info I got while browsing? Could be wrong) but maybe it could have held a pocket instead, just as a thought?(3) Though it was mentioned in the post about the hygiene of it, maybe, just as another part to the theory, again, I have no clue, but they could have had a specialized tongue for it?(4) Though very out there… I know nothing about the theories on tongues of extinct animals so honestly all of this is just a thought. Theory isn’t even the right word, just habit to use that.
Barbourofelids’ chin flanges are generally assumed to have been there as a sort of supporting sheath to help protect their teeth, since they relied on their sabers for killing prey. How much additional soft tissue that involved is debatable though -- reconstructions often give them a sort of droopy gumline on the flanges, but it wouldn’t be going too much further to close those up a bit and call them pockets.
So, yes, it’s possible, but I’m still unsure about how feasible pockets actually are for the particularly long-fanged ones. Anyone who’s had teeth extracted may remember how holes in the gums are a magnet for food particles to get stuck in, and pockets that deep seem like they’d be a hygiene nightmare. (How do clouded leopards and baboons keep their tooth pockets clean? Is it actually even an issue for them? I don’t know.)
If these animals had a specialized tongue, though, we’d probably see evidence of something odd going on with their hyoids – I’m not sure about barbourofelids specifically, but apparently Smilodon seems to have had a pretty standard-looking feline hyoid, very similar to that of a lion. So probably no weird tongue shenanigans, then.
Of course, this all very speculative, and maybe it really is still simpler to assume sabertoothed animals kept their big teeth exposed all the time. (Mark Witton has a post about this over on his blog. The language is a bit more technical, but he makes some good arguments.) Until some more extensive research is done on this whole issue, we just don’t know.
