Notan Design
This art piece is one that I made during my grade 9 visual arts class and Notan is a Japanese design which involves the light and dark elements which can make it seem as the images are reflected. This can make it seem as if there was a plane mirror that is helping reflect the images except that they are reversed colours. Notan design can show that there cannot be negative space without positive space and vice-versa. This can be the same case with an object and the mirror’s image. Without an object in front of the mirror, there cannot be an image shown.
Water Reflection Photography
The water makes it seem like the object or structure is also upside-down but this is done using the different angles to see where the light hits the water which can make images reflect off the water. When we use the camera, we want to pick a place that will make the image look cool and unique. The light does reflect off the water because the angle of refraction is above the critical angle. This causes Total Internal Reflection (TIR) to occur.
Mirror Room
The Japanese artist, Yayoi Kasuma, uses mirrors to create a beautiful and fascinating mirror room. She uses her sculpting techniques to aid in her in making these eye-catching mirror rooms. Sculptors need to make their pieces look different and exciting so people will look at their artwork and potentially buy it. Using mirrors will let the light reflect the different types of objects going through the room and this makes the “artwork” change each time something different moves across. We can predict that the artist is using many plane mirrors in different placements to give the artwork an illusion of different virtual images. Even though Yayoi Kasuma was not an engineer and was a sculptor, she would have needed to use engineering techniques to make sure that the object stays in place. Engineers also need to design models to make sure that their ideas work and if it doesn’t, they need to go back and try again until it does.
