Surviving as a folk dance and cultural asset, the form most are familiar was created during the Joseon Dynasty (1392 - 1910). At that point, Geommu was rearranged by the Royal Court and recreated by the Kisaeng. It has remained a Court dance in the form of “Jinju Geommu” but has also retained its status as a primarily female dance. Dancers of Geommu wear Hanbok (jeogori & chima), Kwaeja (overcoat), Jeon-Dae (belt), and Jeon-Rip (military style cap), which combine to form a stylized version of the Joseon Dynasty military uniform. The dance was modified to use a replica sword while performing to prevent accidental injuries to the performer and audience.

In a Time When Tigers Smoked / 호랑이 담배 피우던 시절 - Korean folktales sometimes begin with this phrase to hide criticism of a class system, foreign invasive superpower, or corrupt authority within an allegory of tigers and magpies or terrapins and rabbits.  The cycle of subjugation and liberation for peoples from tributary, buffer, or puppet states is passed down in generations of folk art and narrative.  Or it is bitterly swallowed in suppressed silence. In commemoration of the March 1st movement, Korea’s 1919 protest and most recent declaration of independence (status still pending), this piece depicts the Mongol / Yuan Dynasty invasions of Goryeo (1231-1257) and the Japanese invasions of Joseon (Imjin War, 1592-1598).

Geommu (also transliterated Gummu, Kommu) is a traditional sword dance practiced in Korea. Geommu is performed with special costume, dance motions, and music. The dance is known for its grace in performance. Extra emphasis is placed on the movement of the costuming, notably the sleeves, in harmony with the movements of the dancer. The symbolic use of ssang dan geom, i.e. a replica of dual short swords, keeps to the militaristic origins of this dance. Geom-mu has become a dance of great beauty and is treasured as the South Korea's 12th Important Intangible Cultural Property.

for context, this drawing depicts a traditional korean sword dancer if you want to look them up. cool as fuck costumes but do not trust my drawing for cultural accuracy. i was going to figure out a dnd character design based on geommu but then got distracted working out how the costumes work and learning about random ass joseon era armor and eventually lost the plot in favor of enjoying pretty colors
