Picture dump time! These are fan-sketches I made of Dystopian Wars, my latest miniatures wargaming obsession. Turns out, I like boats and I cannot lie. Dystopian Wars (DW) is a steampunk/dieselpunk/atompunk alternate history wargame taking place in the year 187X, where great powers have great technology and lack great responsibility. The pictures are not in chronological order; I started with the Korean crafts, did the Polynesian ships and then the Union Atomic ship, then the Greek page, then the Persian Airships. Koreans and Greeks are going to be in the game, so they're baseless speculation on my part. Polynesians were a fan-thing for the Enlightened faction, and I wanted to include a bit of Solarpunk in the designs. Verdict is still out on that. Persian Airships are ludicrous fantasy on my part, based out of the idea of using an archetypical oil lamp as the hull for an airship. In addition, DW has a strong modularity component to it. Each plastic kit can build one thing out of several options, leading to great flexibility in the kits. The Prussians are the best example; if you don't glue down the bridge and primary weapons, you can just have any ship you could build with that kit. I tried duplicating that effect in sketch form, but with the Persians I got fed up and assembled full images of each variation.

In a Time When Tigers Smoked / 호랑이 담배 피우던 시절 - Korean folktales sometimes begin with this phrase to hide criticism of a class system, foreign invasive superpower, or corrupt authority within an allegory of tigers and magpies or terrapins and rabbits.  The cycle of subjugation and liberation for peoples from tributary, buffer, or puppet states is passed down in generations of folk art and narrative.  Or it is bitterly swallowed in suppressed silence. In commemoration of the March 1st movement, Korea’s 1919 protest and most recent declaration of independence (status still pending), this piece depicts the Mongol / Yuan Dynasty invasions of Goryeo (1231-1257) and the Japanese invasions of Joseon (Imjin War, 1592-1598).

Model of a Korean turtle ship

The turtle ship or Geobukseon was a Korean warship type. The ships were mainly used during the Imjin war from 1592 to 1598. However, there are still reports that they still existed in the 18th century, but this information is not confirmed.

Thus the ships varied in size and equipment. All had in common that they had a hull made of spruce wood and the sides were armoured with up to 12 cm thick wooden plates. The length of the ships varied from 30 to 37 meters, it was flat rather barge-like. The hull had three decks, in the lower deck there were cabins and storerooms, on the intermediate deck the oarsmen sat and on the upper deck there were the cannons (mostly 24- 31) and the soldiers (80 oarsmen, 50 soldiers) .

The upper deck was equipped with iron spearheads to ward off enter attacks.The turtle ship had sails, one to two masts each with a rectangular sail, and eight straps on each side, which were operated by a total of eighty oarsmen. The ship was held together by wooden nails, which had the advantage that these nails did not rust, on the one hand, and on the other hand they absorbed part of the water, expanded and thus ensured a more stable connection between the planks.

Additional interlocking beams supported the upper deck and reinforced the structure of the hull. A wooden dragonhead protruded from the bow, and below this head was a spur shaped like a face, just below the waterline. Which is why they were mainly used as ramming ships. Due to the very high construction costs only a few were built.
